1970? D8h tractor

Hi everybody

My dad I just bought an old 1970? D8H crawler tractor and a 20 yard scraper. It’s been sitting for about 5 years but we did change all the fluids and filters. After about the second load steam started coming out of the vent on the rear end and the clutch seems weak. Any ideas thanks?

more info- 36a or is it a 46a? also serial #. there were a lot of serial number ranges on these machines. was the 'steam' actually steam or was it smoke? which vent? there are likely 3 vents. one for each steering clutch compartment and one for the trans.

Sounds like and ag machine with a master clutch.

Clutches are easy enough to adjust. There used to be a tag on the plate on the top of the clutch housing that explained it. Probably long gone on your machine. If you machine has sat that many years there is going to be moisture all through out the internals and getting the machine warm will turn the wet stuff to vapor. If it is smoke, it will stink and burned clutch disks have a very distinctive smell.

Is this a oil bath wet clutch machine? Most likely there is water mixed in with the oil after sitting that long.

I forgot to get the model number tonight but, the steam/smoke is coming out of the vent between the clutch pedals. I did drain the flywheel house and got about a gallon of sludge and water out. I figured on leaving the plug out till tomorrow so it drains out. Is their any way to clean that out better and how bad does that hurt the clutch?

It was most definitely burnt clutch and gear oil.
