It looks like one of the Antarctic dozers is for sale.

Rebecca is the one that sat at the Naval Museum at Port Humeme, CA for many years. It is the only one of the stretch D8s that did not go to New Zeeland for a rebuild during her career on the ice. They sure ruined her by throwing them buckets of yellow paint at her and slopping her up. According to friends the paint is terrible when you get close. She looked better before they painted her. Lots of interest in her by some pretty serious Cat collectors.

Man that paint job destroyed that dozer, over spray on the hour meter and the cyl rods, bet you they were thinking that would increase its value

Cheers

Friend of mine is getting POed at the auction house. They keep changing the auction close. He has been after Rebecca for his working museum. A few are starting to wonder if some of the bids are real.

Correct. Glen bought her. She will join Mary Anne, one of the very few other stretch D8s that survived the Antarctic. Rebecca is unique in that she was not a civilian D8 at the station, as were the rest of them, but was always a U. S. Navy machine that was operated by the Seabees. She was painted orange for her whole career. I believe she is also the only one that did not go to New Zealand and be refurbished complete with a D9 engine. It is sad that they ruined that historically correct, fine orange patina paint, by slathering that (wrong period even) Cat yellow on her. Glen is building a museum in Petaluma so she may soon be available for all to enjoy. I'm sure she will also be out and about strutting her stuff at some of the antique tractor shows.

Is that your friend that wanted it?

Yes it is. He poured the concrete slab for the museum the other day. Today 4 truck loads of building parts showed up. It's going up. I don't think he ever sleeps. He's also running 28 crews 7 days a week on the Santa Rosa fire clean up in addition to his normal construction work. One cool thing about Glen is that his toys do not just set and rot as static displays. They get out and about to shows and charitable events and get run and used. Tanks, Trucks, and Cats and scrapers for starters.

I look forward to seeing Rebecca, Mary Anne, and the side by side twin engine 2U-D8 doing a coordinated push at a antique power show one of these days.

It is with great sadness that I report that my good friend Glen Ghilotti whom recently purchased this Navy Seabees owned stretch D8 passed away Sunday of natural causes. He was in route from the southeastern part of the U.S. transporting a historic rail passenger car back to Peteluma to use in his museum train. God Speed my friend. You will be missed by many.

I talked to Glen last year about trying to rescue/salvage a D8 15A from the woods. He was very interested to get moving on it even though it doesn't seem all that rare. He seemed to have all kinds of energy for pursuing this stuff.

OIH ... My condolences on the loss of your friend.

Iron Planet's photos of Rebecca are almost like being there in person crawling over/under. There's a few hints of the original paint missed by the Philistine paint sprayer. What is the housing in photo #58 ? Looks like a crack in the casting?

Is the 15A still there. They are the model that had the diesel fuel cooled torque converter. They were OK for push loading scrapers. They suffered on a long pull like in using them in a ag setting. We are leaving in a little over a week on a west coast walk-about. Planning on being in Grass Valley at some point after the 15th to visit friends. I would love to take a look at it.

It is still there but the owner is not who I thought it was, and they told me the owner did not want to sell it. So I guess it will sit there until they get tired of it.
