Hi guys, I received a new HP "notebook" {Windows 10} for Christmas.. Nothing wrong w/ the Acer "Aspire" I've been using for years, {windows 7} its just one of those gifts from the wife that you gotta accept..
Anywho.. without doing a search I thought I'd ask first & search later..
HOW do I get my info off the OLD onto the NEW?? I have a lot of files & favorites I'd like to keep..
Is it as simple as buying a "stick".. jamming it in the side, pressing a few buttons & plugging the "stick" into the NEW system & I'm done??
Just remember.. I JUST NOW/yesterday, figured out how to send a picture from my "smart" phone..
NOT kidding..

I'm far from an expert on these computers but for the basic things like text, pictures or say spread-sheet files the memory stick method should work just fine.

Another option if the old and new computer both have DVD burning drives you could just burn a copy of important files on a DVD with he old one then copy them off the DVD drive on the new one. The good thing about doing this is you can label and save the DVD to give you a back-up in case you delet something by mistake in the future or the new machine goes up in smoke!

As for the favorites, I would doe a Google search on "How to save favorites to to computer". If using the same basic browser on both it should be a simple matter of saving the right folder and then pasting it into the correct folder of the new computer.

Now if someone with better computer skills can jump in there is probably a way to plug the two laptops together with a USB cable as a local network and transfer things that way.

I did a Google search I fine this:

I would highly suggest you buy an external hard drive and download all of your old computers information first. Then load the files to the new computer.

It's also a very, very good idea to back up the new computer to the external hard drive on a regular basis and keep the external hard drive in a safe place. Cloud, Google, etc is a great place to store docs if you have the auto save function turned on - the key having that function turned "ON".

Don't ask me how I know this...but it had something to do with a full glass of ice tea, a wobbly table and a laptop that hadn't backed up to the cloud in the last month.

External hard drives are cheap, loosing the latest files on current projects is not.

you could have just pulled the hard drive from your ice tea computer and install it in an external hard drive case and all your files would have been there..unless you damaged the actual hard drive...

ouch that suxs, a buddy dropped his laptop and the hard drive broke, he had all his family pics and lots of info for years without back up, it cost him a pretty penny to send the hard drive out to get the data recovered and put on a new hard drive , it was big $$$$$...
