Having old stuff like that and the new fancy Soilmec really keeps your brain sharp. One is about as complicated as an anvil and the other has more computer crap than Apollo 11!

Had "one of those days" today. Been a little quiet, I knew I had some rigs to move the next couple weeks. Decided I'd put the booster on the trailer and look it over. Slid under it to grease everything and noticed a tire with a bad spot showing wire. Darn. Slid farther and saw a brake shoe laying in the drum half sideways. Wtf.

Jack it up, pull the two tires off that need replaced. Pull the other two off the offending wheel end, pull the drum. Both springs on the front side are gone. No sign of them. Shoes are 80% on one edge and 0% on the other lol. They ran like that long enough it egged the bushings for the rollers. It's been less than a month since I was under it last. It's run some miles.

The missing springs made me wonder so I looked at the other 7 wheel ends, found three more missing the inboard side spring. Whadaya reckon caused it? Poor material leading to broken hooks? Those darn brake spring minions? One pair of shoes looked like it never had them in there.....did Trailking or the axle supplier f$&k up?

Either way she's good to go. I'm headed to look at an IMT tomorrow that's got swing issues. Doesn't want to stop once you let go of the lever. It's not free like a crane, just slow to catch and hold. There's a lot of weight on those machines with the boom, kelly, rotary and tool.

I've already had operator check soft swing switch, free swing switch, considered working conditions as well. It's down to solenoid issues or the brake itself. A little poking and prodding tomorrow and I should have it nailed down.

Take care y'all.

I missed a auction nearby that had a 16V-92 that looked brand new that sold cheap. A friend was there and seen it. It had a clutch on it also. How does 4 smoking stacks and 900 two stroke horsepower sound in a rat rod.

Man oh man that would be sick. I'd modify whatever it took to make that work in a truck!

I don't know about selling a front seat but would like to chase it down some West Virginia roads with it pulling a load of logs. Not sure if my Sportster with the sidecar could keep up but it would be fun to try! Just imagining listening to the sound with a real truck driver walking it up and down the gears.

It's fun to ride with or watch a smooth driver. Set of sticks or otherwise. You don't see the antennas or cab flopping around. I rode with a guy years ago when I was a swamper. Smooth as silk. From that day forward I drove like him. I wanted to be so smooth you almost couldn't tell when I changed gears. Other than when I get in a hurry I'm like that. I've had plenty of practice! Easy on, easy off progressive shifts.

Watching the "gear jammers" who call themselves drivers kill me. Damn cabs look like they're about to be flipped off the frame.

I'd love to tame a 16V anything! V12 Cat or whatever. I've driven some mean trucks. One guy I knew had a SALTY KTA in an old W900A. Stupid HP and I have no doubt driven poorly it would spit the driveline into the next county.

And the same antenna shakers need new clutches 3 or 4 times as often to.

IMG_9278.JPG Moved 5 rigs this week by 4:00 today. Then drove 5 hours to southern Oklahoma to replace a hydraulic line on the Soilmec that runs through the boom up to the top of the crowd cylinder. I'll tackle that in the morning. Here's a pic of the big IMT 220 I moved this afternoon. Trailer didn't want to pick it up, had to track it all the way back then raise up. Relief was letting go about 2,700 psi. Might be a little heavy on 8 axles

Bossman took it....if you want to know me by sight here's a chance to put a face with the posts :)

So I got the line changed out today. All 39' 7.5" of it :). One end was easy it was a flange. The other was a DIN 20 heavy. Got lucky and a place about 30 miles away had the stuff. While waiting on them to make the hose I spotted their cylinder bench.....can't say I've ever seen one quite like it.....

Those guys learned from the same people I did- don't throw anything away, it all has a purpose. I wouldn't think of a old dozer as a bench, but I bet it doesn't move much when they get serious with a cylinder.

By the way, what with all that mud? It's dry as a bone here, there was some showers on sunday, but it missed us by a couple miles. I can't hardly see in my shop yard from all the dust when I drive in.

Me too! Never know when you might stumble into 3 or 4 other donor machines to complete one. How many of us will start looking for a housing to make a bench out of? :)

That mine overlook/museum in Hibbing that was closed when you were here was open again for a while. No tours, just the overlook and museum building. Newspaper article Thursday said closing for good today. Debby and I went Thursday before I forgot. They had a 16-149 out of a 170 ton Payhauler on display. Looks ready to run. Here's a few pictures. They are moving to a new location so they can mine this area. They say the new museum will be open in the new location in the spring. Should be in time for your next trip up. The picture of the half inch hose under the belly is to connect a hydraulic unit for the emergency dump. I wonder how long it took to fill them dump cylinders.
