Pretty quiet around here so I will post something.....There are 26 bolts holding the center pc/tunnel down on the floors.Originally put together with nuts and bolts a total pain to remove with the drivetrain in..Plan was to put nutserts in the floor and fire wall.I bought some 5/16nc steel inserts only to find out my gun was not strong enough to compress them.So I put some 3/8nc aluminum inserts in then.Even then this simple little job took hours to do...
Then weather is still fricken horrible..

Weather was finally dry enough for me to sit on my butt under the truck and clamp up the lines before the drivetrain in.Frame is 1/4 thick so its drill and tap and stainless bolts..Hard to get good pics crouched over holding the camera in one hand..

grizzly 001.JPG grizzly 002.JPG
I also put the bellhousing, starter and engine mounts.I got new ones like the truck was built with but I also got some used Dodge/Cummins one which are bigger and better made. They are 1/4 thicker but I don't think its a issue as I have to make my own trans crossmember once I get the stuff mounted...Bolts on the mounts are grade 8 and the nylocks are stainless
Short of sliding the 5spd on I have everything ready to reinstall the drivetrain...Weather will determine when it happens

Thanks BP....Yes its been very quiet on the Forestry thread. Not sure if it affected other threads but the new format doesn't allow visiters to view the pictures. This doesn't effect posting but certainly effects the amount of traffic and views the forum gets.....

I've been off this site for a couple of years now but catching up a bit with different threads and thought I'd throw in a tidbit or two.

Back in 1986 I went to work for Dave Husby at Eden Lake in the Charlottes and a couple of months later Geoff Buck was hired also.

We spent more than a few hours discussing the idea of a "truck" that would be better than the Fords or Chevs commonly used in logging those days.

As Warehousemen/Parts guys we were familiar with all the parts and brand-names commonly found in most logging outfits so the idea was to build a truck that used mostly those commonly found parts.

Think Stewart-Warner or Cole-Hersee gauges, Spicer driveline parts, Cummins diesel and GMC diesel parts and things like that, almost all found in logging camps back then.

We also talked about the body panels that could be used, the glass for the windows and what they could be, the powertrain, the engine possibilities and most everything else that two guys with nothing else to do could come up with. (It was a 30 days in and 12 days out camp then)

Models designed for oil exploration and mining exploration were mentioned but our focus then was mostly confined to logging as we were most familiar with that.

I moved on in 1987 to open a small store in Sandspit for Island Mack Truck Sales and Geoff moved on to actually get the idea going, as we all know.

Lots of "interesting" stories about Geoff and his adventures in the Charlottes back then as well as a few interesting stories of how he met his demise in the end.

I'm not going to follow up on any of them here though.

I don't recall who bought Pete Cahill's Grizzly along with a pile of parts a few years back but someone here might know.

Used to see him and his truck as well as another guy whose name I can't recall from up Sayward way that had a Grizzly too around here a few years ago.

Time's a flying by nowadays eh what??

Take care.

Dave...do you know which truck Pete owned.I know a lot of the spare parts ended up in Qualicum on the Island.Bruce Warren got them.He owns the Grizzly that is sitting in the compound on old Island Hwy..
I was only a mile away when these trucks were built in North Van.I know lots of the storys/rumours and hear say but I leave it off the forum. It just isn't important any more.Goal is to dispel all the misinformation about them and document the rebuild on one for everyone to see..Dont know if you read the whole thread but I have Geoffs old truck..Its truck # 1.
I am still searching for a few trucks I haven't accounted for..

Trying to make some space in the shop today so I put the new tailgate on the truck for a trial fit..It actually fits pretty good and just needs some minor tweaking

Sorry I don't know which truck Pete owned but I'll see if I can find out.

I agree about the rumours and stuff but gee there are a couple of funny stories that aren't disrespectful I might share someday.

Anyway, good on ya for your rebuild. Looks good and I appreciate people who try to keep history alive and available to others by such acts as rebuilding old beasties and the like.

I've read through most of the thread now and wish I hadn't been away for so long as it would have been easier to just read along as it evolved. LOL

All the best.

Take care.

Hey Dave....I'll assume you saw all of my pics and that pretty much accounts for all the trucks I have found.Pete's truck may be one of the missing ones..
I still need to sit down with Geoffs widow (Jean) and go through her archives and see if I can sort a few things out.Maybe this spring/summer.I need to do a road trip to the Island anyways...
Glad you posted and feel free to tell some humerous storys and share any insight you might have...

Had a friend come over and he power polished the paint on the truck to get rid various marks, stains and general crap that the air deposits on our stuff..Paint on the truck isn't to bad actually..I still have to pull the windshield and clean up the damage behind them..
The paint came up good and the truck is looking good...I couldn't pull it out of the tent as the engine is sitting in front of it..

Hi again and sorry for delay in getting back.

Had a most enlightening and informational talk for over an hour earlier today with Art Bowbrick from Sayward who has #7, a crewcab that he's been rebuilding for some time now.

He is a veritable wealth of information and would welcome any phone calls from anyone who would like to know more about Grizzly trucks and their history.

Pete Cahill's truck was #3 and ended up in Port Alberni he says, if that's any help.

He knows who got most of the trucks originally and where they were used and/or ended up so if you'd like, give him a call. He's in the phone-book so I won't post his number here and I specifically asked him if he minded if I gave his name and number and he was most welcome to the idea so call him.

Ask him about what he's done on his truck too, as it's quite extensive with a lot of panels that rusted badly replaced with SS.

Rust was not friendly to the Grizzly it seems. He also knows a lot about some of the problems encountered along the way during the construction, the type of frames used on various units and a lot of that stuff.

Can't recommend him enough.

Anyway, all the best with your projects going forward and if you get this way in Mid-August or thereabouts give me a call and I'll take you rowing for Tyee in the Tyee Pool.

Take care.
