I have been operating a Champion 710A grader for awhile with no problems today the grader started fine, and I put a small
scrape in than it would not go move in reverse or forward. The hydraulics all work fine could it be a transmission solonoid
or tranmission problem, there were no problems prior to this. Thank you in advance for your help. Andy

What generation is that one? Is it the 8400 transmission? That's the only one I am a BIT familiar with. There's the possibility of transmission pump failure, or the accessory drive that drives it. Also there's a cover on the front of the transmission that can get grooved up and show similar symptoms.

Thank you for your reply, how would you check the transmission pump failure, or the accessory drive? There is an error code that comes up it is C.7 which is no power to solenoids in the electrical troubleshooting guide that I have, are the solenoids inside the transmission or can they be worked on from the outside. Tomorrow I'll get some numbers off the transmission and see if I see anything out of place. It is all a little bit overwhelming as I'm used to working on cars and not anything so big. Thank you Andy

This stuff is bigger yes, all the fundamentals are the same. We have a Champion that age and anytime we've had an electrical issue related to the trans it's been a bad connection, corrosion or a bad wire. Seldom a hard part malfunction. Look for the obvious stuff first, fuses, questionable looking connections etc.

First time I tore into our D11 I thought what in the world have I gotten myself into?!? It takes longer because the parts are bigger but at the end of the day gears are gears, seals are seals, DC current is DC current and diesel smells like roses to me!

I'm not sure what transmission it has in it. The serial # is 710a-157-15-16460, on the housing of the transmission casing is #29701 on top 687d below it those number are cast into the body of the transmission, I could not find where the tag is located do those #s help, I could not find any loose or corroded wire and still the same error code c.7 (which is no power to solenoid circuits). So I'm not sure if it is the 8400 transmission, where would the tag be located? No circuit breaker are tripped. Thank you for the offer on the manual but not sure if it is the 8400 for now. Thank you Andy

At the bottom of your forward reverse lever there should be a micro switch. (red wire# 120) should be hot when in forward or reverse not in neutral power to it comes form transmission relay.

Thank you I will check that. I printed a 8400 electrical troubleshooting guide for a champion road grader, and the location of the fuse panel is not where they describe it and not so easy to access as the manual suggest, so it may not be a 8400, I will have to remove the console to get to the micro switch that you mention, the console does not look easy to remove to gain access underneath to look at the wires switches etc but I'll have to give it a try. Thank you Andy

The serial # you gave suggests a mid 80's machine. A machine from that time period will have the transmission pump under the radiator. The ones that I had trouble with were driven off the bellhousing on the engine (midway through series III's and later). The solenoids are all on the front of the transmission. They are coils that go over spools that screw in to the transmission. I can't remember on those, but at least one of the spools has 2 solenoids stacked. The solenoids are fairly easy to identify- they are a big sleeve (those ones being older, they are a little larger, but same deal), with a nut on top that retains then over a shaft (the spool). If you've got a diagnostic code, I would think you have an 8400. I don't think the Gearco's has diagnostic abilities. I'm a little surprised the display is still legible too. And yes, that fuse panel being a way down in the console is a real treat. But I do kind of like the fact those old ones are still 12 volt. When trying to chase that red wire laycobeau mentioned, slip the screws out of the black cover on the console that has the switches in it maybe? Will it move far enough out of the way to shine a light down in there and see?

Thank you all for the information, I will check it this week maybe tomorrow, I did see the solenoids on front of the transmission just as you described, they have the nut on top of the shaft and they do not look to hard to get too. At first when the machine would did not move the error code of C 2.3 (open circuit to solenoid 6 (L) came up and was there for awhile, then while moving the levers forward and reverse and the speed lever it changed to C 2.7 (no power to solenoid circuits) and that code has and remained since. I will check for the red wire to the micro switch that Laycobeau mentioned underneath the control panel and hopefully see it. The console I'm a little nervous getting into it and causing more problems as it not my machine but it happened while I was operating it. The guys that own the machine called the repair shop to fix it but they did not get to it yet, hopefully I could get it fixed for them or at least give the repair shop a good head start on what the problem may be. Thank you Andy

Today went out to motor grader and removed the console and looked for the micro switch on the forward and reverse lever that Laycobeau mentioned, everything looked ok, but then notice the wiring harness to the solenoid circuits was unplugged and must have vibrated out to where the pins attach. I reattached it and it is a goer again. The tread in nut that pulls the pins is cracked I believe so I have to electrical tape it in so it does not vibrate out again. A big thank you all for all of your help it gave me confidence to try to fix it. Thank you Andy

Hello there,
We've a Champion 740 (Series I). The machine the using the manual transmission with two sticks. I trust the transmission is Gearco 9135. We need some oil seals for both input and output drive shafts. Can someone kindly assist with information on the dimensions of the seals. Also kindly suggest where they could be bought.

My regards.
