We have a new to us 2009 genie z135 we are having an issue with.
When we try to operate the main boom section it will stand it all the way to vertical and will not start the telescoping of all the sections. However it will try to raise the section section of boom that attaches to the end of the main section with the joystick for the main boom. I hope that makes sense..... its hard to describe.
I have no idea how this machine is set up from a safety perspective and proximity sensors so i dont really know where to start. I am told there is no error code on the lower display. Also the fact that the main boom joystick is operating the second boom lift up function is very strange! If im understanding the operator correctly that is.
Any ideas?

There are 2 angle sensors and a series of limit switches on the unit, start first by raising the tower section out of the rest all the way and see if that will allow the tower to extend, if there is an issue with the limit switch it will trip a sensor/switch disagreement error on the lower control panel screen, now as for the main boom not extending that can be a coil fault of a limit switch fault if its coil related you should see it on the base control panel screen when doing that function. Get the serial number of the unit so I can get the proper manual for it and also get the software version you should see it cycle across the screen when you pull the base control e-stop. It may be due for a software update which corrects a lot of small issues with these booms.

Well, the problem seems to have worked itself out..... The only time its ever done this was when it was 15 degrees or less out so im attributing it to the temps. Cold weather and electronics dont mix i guess!
I would be interested to know if it needs an update. The serial number is Z13507-385. I will have the guys see what is the current software version and get back to you.

Yeah 1.11 there are several updates for software that you can download to a laptop off of genies website but you need Web gpi and a serial cable to do so. Also be aware that you need to update both the base and platform boards to make it work. Best advice is to get a tech to do it if your not familiar with the process because messing it up can mean doing a total recalibration of the boom.
