so if the d8 wasnt operator error, you'd think that with 5 operators running the bucket wheel would have seen the dozer sitting there:confused:  . or maybe thats just me thinking again:beatsme

As it was told to me, the dozer operator had stepped off the machine to relieve himself when the wheel swung towards it. So that would make it operator error on the part of the dozer operator.

The wheel was being run from the cab on the blind side of the wheel at the time. These machines have two cabs, one on either side. So when swinging one way, they have to rely on cameras to see what is over there. If the dozer was parked and the operator never saw it in the camera, he would nevr have known he had caught it.

One thing to remember as well. The 5 operators are not all looking at the bucket wheel, they work on different parts of the whole system. Our bucketwheels ran with a 3 person crew. The operator in the cab, the operator who ran the discharge onto the conveyor belt, and the third was the cat operator to do cleanup around the machine.

Yea that thing was considered the biggest TRACKED machine built by humans. The giant bucket wheel excavator "Bagger 288" was built by Krupp in Germany in 1978. Anyone spot any videos of this great machine in action?

Hey musclegirl. Where did you find these pictures of de D8R towed back to the ground? I'm documenting this case for school and would like to collect as much pictures as possible about this incident. If anybody else has more pictures about this, please feel free to send them to me or mention the URL's.

I seen that a while ago, but forgot all about it. That's nuts how big that thing is. Any videos of it floating around?
