Tag line is a rope tied to one end of the load to help navigate. Usually a person on the ground has the tag line. In the case of setting roof trusses you only have control of the center of the load. The guy on the tag line is supposed to keep the load straight and turned the right direction. A good tag line guy came you look like a great operator. An idiot on the tag line is one of the most frustrating things in the world.

Usually the older Amish guys that don't want to be up on the walls anymore are pretty good at it. 90 percent of the time it's the new guy or the guy that's to dumb to do anything else so they put him on the tag line.

That's why the cranes have a window that opens in the front. So you can curse at the guy on the tag line.

the surgeon general has determined that tag lines are the number one cause of operator hypertension and alcoholism after extensive studies.

One day after the guy on the tag line for me hit the framers trailer the side of the house and finally my Boom ,( and absolutely no reason for it other than he just didn't give a ****) I stopped and told him if he wanted to hit stuff I couldn't stop him but if he hit my boom again we would be having a very serious chat, he never hit anything again that day.

This is a roof section I did last week, it was almost a boat in the basement they built it under the cable TV line with very little room to swing to the side, took a bit of wiggling but we got it.
If you look close you can read the Greer screen

This is a vertical auger I took out of a grain drier the old one is on the left the new one on the right I think they got all the good out of it

Nice work Tradesman .

Cant quite make out the numbers on the Greer screen but looks like it gives you load , radius , & boom length . That's pretty handy .

I would like to at least have a load cell on the line . The one I was looking at was a" Crane smart" brand .

They sure did get the good out of the auger on the grain dryer . That looks like an old Toxowick brand dryer . Been parting ours out over the years for other projects . :)

I'm thinking the perforated sheet metal might make good engine guards for a dozer .

the roof section would be a good candidate for a spreader beam. the four cables you have lifting ii are pulling the structure together. truss assemblies don't like lateral loads but are designed for compressive forces in line with the truss. they tend to fold up easily when you push on the weak side of the truss. if you don't use a spreader beam you need to x-brace the hell out of it.

They put 2x8 under the rafter against the braces it spreads the load out over the length of the roof section, done a lot of them this way for this framer

and keeps the trusses from squeezing together, kool.
I've had other lesser framers try the same without the sub framing and like you suggested they just start folding up, then I get to shut down and watch them scramble to support it

You need a load cell. We used to run without one. You won't believe how many times stuff weighs more then you think. It scares me to think how many times I overloaded our old grove because I was told the wrong weight. Hirschman makes a decent system that is half the cost of crane smart. We've had them for a year or two and they are a good system for the money.

Yes Knepptune , at this point I would be happy with just the load cell . Some loads are easy to judge in weight and others are not . I will sure take a look at the Hirschman system you suggested .

I got fooled on a grain dryer we moved this summer . https://www.heavyequipmentforums.co...7550-goes-over&p=513072&viewfull=1#post513072
