I don't know of anywhere you can buy that sort of thing. Make friends with a machinist and get him/her to whip you up a couple. Semi-hard plastic works really well for seal drivers

Hello!
I am new to the forum, so please excuse my interruption. We've recently acquired a JLG 40F at my work, but no service manual can be had. Searching the internet has brought me here. I'm looking to obtain a service manual, all I can find online is the 40H, and I don't know that its similar enough to be used for basic things like tire pressure.
Luckily, ours works pretty good, looks like someone dropped in a different engine over years- and I'd like to keep it that way!
Thanks, you guys seem like you are an invaluable resource for older equipment, which we have a lot of.

Welcome Shopgirl. You are correct, this forum is invaluable for those of us that own these beauties. There are a couple of super knowledgeable folks like "OFF" and "Willie" that keep a pretty close eye on us amateur 40F owners. I know OFF has Manuals in PDF form he has emailed folks. I have originals and never scanned them. You will be lost without them.

wow.. this is quite the thread. I've recently purchased a JLG 60G boom lift and am trying to track down any manuals or diagrams that will help me get this thing back to work. any help or info would be much appreciated. thanx in advance

Welcome dieseldogg. 60G was a very rare machine, I've never actually seen one in the flesh. No manuals I know of for your machine. 60H had a lot of new stuff added, a big change in thinking as far as design goes. The 60G might be closer to a 50F or a 60F. What kind of engine is it? Air cooled or liquid cooled?
Hopefully someone will read this and offer up a copy of a 60G manual. There are people looking for a 40G manual as well.
What part of Canada are you in?

Thanx for the welcome OFF. I'm from B.C. I see you are in Alberta. I have relatives in Leduc, Calgary and Westlock. My machine has an air cooled Wisconsin. VG4D? It's an 81 that was always stored indoors and used very little. It has a few issues with it that I'm hoping will be minor "lack of use" problems. I'm new to the heavy equipment game but with the purchase of this lift and jd310d backhoe i'm hoping to gather some literature and jump right in. I plan to start a new thread on this machine soon so prepare to have your brain picked. Thanx again. Rick

I recently acquired what I believe to be a 40F here are a couple pics and the SN is 730226 Also the main wiring is shot on top of the boom. From the ground all was working except lift. Now lift and rotate don't work.

Rhino, having that battery hooked up backwards will have damaged any curcuit where there is a diode. (one way valve) Like your alternator for example. It has 3 diodes that convert A/C current to DC current. When it was hooked up in reverse you had a direct short to ground. Not sure if your old Moog 40F has other diodes (maybe in the foot switch) but if it does they will most likely be cooked, depending on their function.
Something else to look at when you lose drive/lift/swing from both basket & ground is the dump valve relays. They are mounted on the frame members under the engine/hydraulic pump and look like a silver Ford starter solenoid. There should be serveral of them down there, one for each dump valve, one for the horn, possibley one for the throttle.

There are three relays across the frame. One for sure is for the emergency pump. The other two I'm still working to identify their use. There are two diodes on the terminal board at each the main and basket. The ones at the basket are broke for sure. The two at the main terminal board I will test soon.

Dieseldogg, I have a set of 60G manuals, a service and maint. manual and also a parts manual. I don't know when I will have time to copy them but I'll see. What part of BC are from? I'm just 4 miles down from the Aldergrove crossing.

Were you able to find the Serial Number location? I have a 40F also and it's been repainted several times. (painted over and over, I should say) if you could give me a really good description on it's location I'd be extremely grateful.

Trying to get a handle on this.
This place has a lot of great information. I need to replace the steering cylinder seals on our JLG 40F machine and can't seem to locate the serial numbers. It's been painted 3 to 4 times so I'll have to scrape some paint to find them, just hoping not to scrape too much. Any idea on a precise location(s) on the serials # would be super helpful.

I haven't "touched" an F series JLG since 1998 so hopefully one of the guys who still have one will pipe up with the serial number location. I "remember" the serial number being on a plate either attached to the top of the boom by the basket or on the post under the basket control box. Seal kits are tricky - JLG used cylinders from at least 2 manufacurers and they're never sure which cylinder your machine has.

OFF, thanks for the info. There are no plates with numbers to be found, (just hazard/warning plates) I'll give it another day or two to see if anyone else can help out and then I guess start hitting some areas with stripper and see what I can find.
