oil into antifreeze, no anti freeze into oil cat 3306 engine

What is the engine in, and does it hav e a trans cooler?
I have tested coolers like that and got fooled. Better change the cooler if you have it off. Then wash out cooling system with a good soap and water a few times untill water is clear. Then put antifreeze back in.

Couple questions.
Is it engine oil for sure? Nice and black, then again you said Cat not Detroit ;-)
Next is there a cooler in the bottom tank of the radiator?
I'd be tempted to agree with Bob/Ont not sure what the price of an exchange oil cooler from Cat is these days but might be worth it for peace of mind.
Just checked, if it is the same cooler I see on a 3306 in a 966C New 7N0165 is about $710, Reman 0R3499 is about $505+ core, New Cat "Classic" 295-5670 is about $215.
A hole in the sleeve will do this, same as a crack in the sleeve or a blown head gasket, had all three over the years. If its a hole in the sleeve it'll be towards the top and ususally leak pressure and oil into the water and not water into the oil. Deeres years back were notorious for this happening. If its not any of the above mentioned things.

talked to a cat mechanic about cooler, he said that it probably wouldn't leak until it got hot (expansion). left air pressure hooked up and placed in a steel pail with water. placed pail on propane burner and heated to 214 deg f. no leak. talked to another cat mechanic, asked if the head gasket could cause the oil to get into antifreeze. he said it could but was more likely to be a cracked head and only leaks under compression. a head gasket leak, fluids normally go both ways, or because of the design of cat 3306 leak would probably be to the external. decided to reinstall old cooler, flush cooling system using calgonite dishwasher soap and check for exhaust gasses in rad. will probably do this this weekend and know more for next week. want to thank everyone for there input. will post results later next week.

are you sure there isn't a hyd/trans cooler as part of the Rad or an water to oil cooler mounted near the trans?
9 times outta 10 it's a cooler putting oil into the coolant, the other 1 it'll be tipped in there my mistake
from what I've seen coolant will find its way into the oil if it's a cracked head or liner

Agree, that's why I was asking what the oil looked like. Engine oil normally shows up as grey slim, other oils show as brown to tan.
I know about the grey slim, just had a C18 pop an oil cooler yesterday. New cooler on the way need to flush with some Spic&Span and then some fresh water. It's aways sumptin!!
reinstalled used cooler,flushed with calgonite dishwasher soap. pulled thermostat,filled with straight water and put to work in the field. ran for less than 5 min and temp went to 220 deg f. shut down and let cool flushed system again, got out more grey oil sludge. tried again. this time tractor worked for 20 min and over heated. shut down and let cool. reflushed system again, gettin very little sludge. blew air from fan side to front, front to fan side, and fan side to front until no dust or fuss appeared. sent tractor back to field and worked for 6 hours. temp never went over 160 deg f. brought back into yard and reflushed 2 more times with calgonite and 2 times with fresh water. reinstalled thermostat and filled with antifreeze water mix to -50 def f. put back to work for 18 hours. temp never went over 190 deg f, same as thermostat. no oil into antifreeze no antifreeze into oil. I have come to the conclussion that someone sabatoged tractor by putting used motor oil into rad. we have run this tractor for 600 hrs in the last 2 years in hot and cold weather and never any sign off oil in antifreeze thanks to everyone that had input. strange things sometimes things happen. hope this one doesn't again.

A mislabeled container is a likey cause. Have seen a hydraulic bucket filled with antifreeze put in a hydraulic tank and more than once.
