122 vs Northwest
We came across this Northwest shovel in one of our setting . We decided to use it for a guyline stump . In the pictures the 122 is lifting the bucket up on the Northwest shovel trying to swing it so we could hook up to the carriage with a guyline, but it looked like someone tried to blow up the Northwest from underneath the main house . The whole floor was lifted up. We didn't have much luck swinging it , but it worked out . I ended up taking the big lifting block used to raise and lower the stick and bucket ( now on display in my yard with some of my other stuff ). A few months later the Northwest was gone

Been a member now for 3 years and never posted a picture. Couldn't figure out how to resize. When I finally thought I had that figured out then I couldn't find them in the computer after I thought they were resized. Long and short of it is my daughter finally spent some time and showed the old guy how it's done so I'll give it a go. I've got a set of pics here from the R,B. auction in Oct 2008 in Chemainus when all or most of the Madill machinery still in the yard when they shut the doors was liquidated. Also at this auction was a bunch of Ted Leroys stuff. Bear with me because I'm going to put up everything from the auction on the Madill thread as most of the pics at least have a Madill somewhere in the background and I don't know enough about the other stuff to know where to put any pics that don't. Besides forestry guys just wanna see pics of machinery right. Sorry I don't have any serial #s or any other info except the date I took the pics .dd 001.JPG002.JPG003.JPG004.JPG005.JPG

Thanks for the enthusiasm guys. Hope I can live up to expections. I wish I had found HEF a long time ago I would have got tons more pic and info. When you're on production in the plant you have to produce or in the field doing service work and up to your eyebells in gear dope it's not real conducive to taking pics or keeping track of what machine goes to where or what you're repairing. Even at the auction who knew that anyone out there cared other than those of us that had spent most of our working lives building the beasts and keeping them running. There were lots of us there for that "last auction" both retirees like me and those terminated when the door shut . There were also a lot of us there when the plant equipment was auctioned. Sad sad days. I'll put up the pics I have and take more when I get the opportunity. I'll try to do better at the serial #s and other data with pics taken in future. Sorry no auction brochure from RB but I do have one from the plant auction and it is multi multi pages long. Right down to the last nut and bolt almost. Won't be posting it. d.d.

Hi, everyone! I haven't been out here in ages, but I wanted to post today to give you all a look at what I've been doing. I'm the guy on here who has no professional ties to the forestry industry, but is a big Sherman tank fan...and thus, very interested in the Madill 071 yarders built on those chassis. I've started my 1/35 scale model project, and some of you wished to see images of the progress. Here's a few for starters. I've got the winch bedplates shaped and the holes drilled for the Skyline, Haulback, and Main winch drums and I've built up the winch drums themselves. The pictures show things mocked up to test the fit, and show the gears that I will use. The tooth counts are way off, but these are standard parts of about the right size. The pictures of the spar end show the progress to date, with the Skyline deflection sheave installed in the spar, the mounts & axle tube for the Main & Haulback sheaves, and the swiveling Skyline sheave all started. There are miles to go on this, since everything above the tracks must be scratchbuilt. I'll use a Tasca/Asuka Models M4 lower hull & suspension, and Panda Plastics tracks. I haven't decided if I'll go with the CDP track or something more common, like worn T48 shoes. DSC06841.JPGDSC06842.JPGDSC06843.JPGDSC06844.JPGDSC06845.JPG

Nice start on your project Beekster, I can't wait to see more pictures as it progresses. Do you make the gears and shafts as well? Is the winch frame made of sheet plastic? Just curious as I would like to tackle a similar project albeit a bigger machine one day.

The gears are standard items from Plastruct, and everything else is Evergreen stock. The bedplates are laminated from several sheets of .030" stock, and the axle shafts and winch cores are built up from Plastruct tubing. The winch flanges are slightly out of round, because the fit of the sleeved tubing isn't as tight as one might like. But it's not noticeable at all at this stage, and certainly won't be once the rest of the thing is built out and there's line on the winch drums.

The bedplates were scaled from a pile of measurements that I took of #70097 sitting in Tillamook, OR. I had a CAD-drafter buddy of mine draw up a template, and I used Elmer's glue to glue paper copies to the plastic sheet before cutting out the parts. Then it was a matter of using my True Sander to square things up and work down to the finished dimension, using a digital caliper to measure frequently along the way.

The spar is made from .500" tubing; it should be .518" in scale but I'll live with the discrepancy. Laminating a sheet of .010" sheet to the tube is damn near impossible (I tried on an earlier spar attempt), and milling it to a consistent diameter would be a trial as well. It's nearly 13 inches long!
