Metal in hydrolics

While digging up a stump with my 555E the boom stuck to the left got off had a look and noting was keeping the lever from going down but the plunger on the valve bank wasnt going down so I spent the day taking off the valve bank ointhead I hammered out the plunger Now I know that was wrong but I did it there was some metal framments making it stick and scaring from me forcing it out. I took it to the local hydrolic shop and he said it didnt look like pump parts but he thought it came from a cylinder. He repaired the valve bank for a small fee of $1080.00 and said I need to bleed down the hydrolics and take the cylinders off find the bad one and bring it to him. What do yall think did I get screwed on the repair? Any advice on which cylinder to start with the one he rebuilt allows the boom to swing right.

Assuming the 555E has swing cylinders - I would start looking there. As to which one .......... you have a 50% chance of getting it right first time.

In regards to the repair costs for the valve bank. $1080.00 is a lot of money - but it is hard to judge another persons charges for a repair unless you know for certain what his costs were for the repair parts he used. It is downright sinful what Case charges for repair parts. And he is entitled to a decent hourly rate for his time. You could ask him for a breakdown of his charges.

I dont know I figured $400-$500 but dang $1080 and I took it off carried to him if he took it off repaired it and put it back on that would be fair to me but I know hydrolic anything is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ im gonna do as he says and finish my work and sell it I cant afford those kind of repairs. I will post it on here when I do its a clean machine 1700hrs this is the first probem I have had out of it.

Update got the valve bank back on and tryed her out when I swing left the boom moves slow for a couple feet then takes off seems like a bad spot in the cylinder it must be gouged out causing the metal in the system when I swing right from the center position it does fine,next is to take off the cylinder so if a cylinder is gouged out or has a bad spot in it can it be fixed? A refurbished cyliner is around $2,500 I think if it could be rebuilt thats the way to go. Any help would be appreciated.

I actually don't think the price of repair is all that bad, the only proper repair for that problem is to replace the damaged section with new and the price of those sections is steep regardless of brand. One could possibly get the spool moving freely but the internal scoring will cause system leakage and allow pressure builup in that system as a product of open center flow/pressure seeping through score markings in the casting. If you have put the valve back on and not eliminated the source of metal contamination you stand a chance of doing it all over.

Replacement of the damaged valve section is the only was to repair that damage and as someone else said valve sections are costly. It does not sound like you were over charged to me.
I would look for cylinders having bent rods. This will allow the piston to gouge into the cylinder tube and shave metal off the cylinder wall. Bent rod on bucket cylinder would be my first guess.

Doesn't the oil go from the cylinder, back to tank, then through the filter & pump (not sure of the order on this brand) and then through the valves and back into the cylinder? IMO no metal big enough to do all that damage should be able to pass through the filter. FWIW I would cut open the hydraulic filter and see how much metal is in there before operating the machine any more.

look at the swing post and the swing cylinder rods attach for roots rocks ect ,,, if it has a chain swing drive check it also

NO, the return oil has no choice but to return through its hose directly back into the same valve section that sent it out albiet by the opposite port in the section, if he has put the valve back on and is working the system without locating and eliminating the problem there is an excellent probability of the damage reoccouring as there is no guarantee that more metal will not move into the valve from the damaged component

I replaced the filter didnt think to cut it open. True about causing more problems by operating it im about to bleed the hoses and pull apart the cylinders have a look just visually the rods look fine and no leaks found a replacement on ebay starting bid $2,500 that seemes high for a single cylinder to me .

I think the e models had problem with cyl on the swing doing that i fix one that had a mess up cyl and hyd shop put a new tube on it for them for $600 Far as control valves if its was taking apart just clean and freeed up and not replaced that was a lot I done jobs like that take valves off the machine clean them and reseal them and put them back on for $1000

They had to replace 1 spool cause I boogered it up no o rings in these banks tight tolerances. Im gonna see if the cylinder can be repared.
