So... lately we have seen some new cat iron... the 349, new dozers, new rock trucks... buggies. How about Wheel Loaders?

Can't really comment on the machine till specs come out, but it looks alright. I like the new cab, with the open design and joystick steering. They ought to call this the 966I or J because it looks nothing like the H series machines.

K is what they call them over here.

Well, with a hood big enough to cover all the emissions goodies, it sure gives it a fat a--

Heres hoping it performes well, but I doubt there will be many of them still working productively 20 years from now like the older ones.

966 D's are over 25 years old, and still holding their value like few other machines. "E" models nearly as good, and if you look, they outsell "F" models most of the time.

They do it because of the reliability, and I just don't see it on the new ones.

Is that front window glass curved? I just hate the fancy glass seeing how it always gets broke. Any glass with a curve is a long wait and big dollars.

The had better have a optional guard for the front of that cab.

My thoughts exactly John, it also creates problems with the wiper. I am not knocking the Cat, I have a Komatsu with curved glass as well, with all the associated problems, but on the next model they went back to a simple flat pane of glass. I also like the little mini scoop on the rear of the machine, it should hold at least half a cubic metre of material behind the radiator, when the operator backs into a bank or stockpile.

I would like to try the joystick controls though.

Maybe it's the camera angle but it looks like visibility while backing would be poor for a machine that backs every load

I heard a rumor that during the second quarter of next year, CAT will be releasing their new transmissions for wheel loaders. Apparently, one of Volvo's OptiShift engineers have begun working at Caterpillar instead ... rumor also said that they would be faster than the Volvo's. The time may well tell what is true and not just a rumor.

No! Volvo engineers have not start working for Cat. I am trying to do a even better Optishift!

Rear-view camera is standard equipment on the 950K, 962K 966K, 972K and 980K. With the aftertreatment devices (DPFs) necessary to meet Tier 4 Interim, they're all getting big in the rear end. Guess everybody is going to get some practice backing up via television screen.

With the addition of a lock-up torque converter on the 980K, now the whole K Series does offer lock-up converters, which is one basic building block for Optishift. 'Course Volvo's reverse by braking feature does contribute significantly to the fuel savings its transmission can deliver . . .

The photos Cat circulated with its press release last week are with my coverage of the loaders here (click on the photos for a larger view). I also interviewed the Cat product manager for wheel loaders last week, but I don't believe that video has been edited and posted yet.

Looking forward to the interview -- I'm not sure who the Product Manager is anymore with all the reorgs.

But your point above is apt... I've been saying for a while that we should wait and see before judging the rear ends of Cat excavators. I have a suspicion that Cat's doing this to get ready for T4f where others are just meeting T4i. We'll see how much the machines of the rest of the industry grows in a few years. I could still be wrong. ;)

They're all looking pretty big now. Did you see the hood of that 460 ADT Deere intro'd?

I think most are building their T4i solutions about the same size as they expect the T4F to be. Cat says they are. Seems like I've heard others (Deere at least) say the same, but it all starts to run together after a few days in Vegas . . .

If a Volvo engineer started working for Cat we will know shortly when transmissions start to fail. Also all the parts prices for the transmission wiil Quadruple

This is probably the wrong thread to ask it, but what I'm most curious about is excavators. People have been complaining about Cat's huge rear ends with the E-series (even while Volvo and Deere are keeping them small), so are the G-series Deeres and D-series Volvos as big as they'll be for T4f, too?

You're right Tigerotor it is the wrong place lol... but it's the intarweb its all in the wrong place.

I think the rear ends on the Deere's are as big as they are going to get for the T4f, I couldn't tell you about Volvo as I didn't stop in they're booth to look at the hoes. I just saw its a 480 or 490 now...and still ugly.

A lot of people are slamming Cat for making the back ends huge and yeah I admit I thought the 320E they had at the show was the 349 from behind. They are ugly but Cat is doing what they can to make it work. Your either going to make it long... or make it high. I would prefer some high since that keeps guys from ramming counterweights into things. Give it some time, Cat is going to get the size down soon. The technology is gonna need some refinement just as it has with the light pickups (even though thats not a great example).

C'mon Burnout, you know better than that. Seems like half the "operators" out there could clean the paint off a zero tailswing machine in less than an hour.
