So it appears that KW has continued the great trucks that Hayes pioneered. The relationship is very apparent.

As many are aware the different truck model designations refers primarily to the differences in the frame. Here are some of my own observations:
848: 10-3/4" Deep C Channel Flex Frame - 34" Width
849: Variable Web Flex Frame - 40" Width
850: Rigid Frame - 40" Width (Similar to HDX, WHDX & P16's)

Does anyone else have any additional info or differing observations?

Tyler, I did not know. Very interesting. Once I was told by a guy working for WFP that you could look at rear springs to settle if it was a 848 or a 849 model, but I have never figured out how.

Tyler, I did not know. Very interesting. Once I was told by a guy working for WFP that you could look at rear springs to settle if it was a 848 or a 849 model, but I have never figured out how.

Many of the heavy KW trucks were rigid with walking beams anyway, no rear springs to be found. All of our C500 and C540 trucks were rigid as well, no springs. I'll find some pics.

A few pics....

All are KW C500 and C540. All are ex-Weyerhaeuser, all Cummins power, and all with Clark rearends, solid walking-beam, no suspension (no springs, no biscuits, or otherwise).

Hundreds of these trucks came to Alaska and here they still sit.

Looks like a couple of them had 12V71s in them.

Typically, how heavy were the rears in the off-highway KWs? My dad told me that his usually grossed out at around 150,000 at Vail. I have heard that they ran 64,000 rears, and that would add up pretty close with about a 24,000 front.

Vigilant I would wonder if in fact there was room for a 12V in the engine compartment--These units posted all have Cummins in them (single exhaust system) whereas the 12V has dual exhaust. Looking at the trucks from there it is hard to tell if you could stuff a green leaker in there or not. What do you think???

Thanks to everyone for the great pictures and taking time to tell more about the area and trucks. Some time maybe you could share more information on how the trucks were equipped. Motor sizes and horse power, transmissions, capacity, empty and loaded weights, over all lengths, and widths.

When you think how long the trucks last in such poor operating conditions, it just seems amazing. Great stuff I for one really appreciate you taking time to load, and share pictures and tell the stories!!!!!!
