wood or metal dovetail?

Reflooring a 20 ton tag trailer trying to decide whether to go back with the wood or do some type of angle iron runners on the detail. l mostly haul a backhoe on it but occasionally will be hauling a 120 excavated and a doze as well. any opinions on what others prefer? Wood or metal? does the wood get slick when wet? Any opinions would be appreciated. thanks.

Wood is slick when wet but not as slick as metal.Use wood wherever you can.Ron G

Here is what we used on our lowboy and it works great, you have to weld 1 1/2" angle iron for it to set on and it is awesome plenty of traction, no slip.

If you're going to haul a machine with steel track you need angle iron. Wood gets really hairy when wet, came off sideways on our old wood tilt deck more than once. Not so bad with an excavator but a crawler at the tipping point on a dove tail with wood could be interesting.

I will look on Monday at what a paid per piece, but I think it was about $650.00 for the rumber, and then the angle was a couple of hundred. That was for a 25' well on the trailer, and it is awesome. The rumber come in 2" x 6", 2" x 8", and there are other dimensions too. I think I'll get probably 10 years at least out of the rumber deck. It works well the first I saw it was at the Mid America Truck show on a globe trailer it comes standard on their trailers, or you can order them with wood. Below is the link to their site.

Thanks Bill, we are having oak sawed to do our deck but I think I will put it in the barn and use rumber instead(hopefully) I really like the idea of traction; especially on a tag trailer!

i would go for checker plate if you are just hauling machines and dont intend to slide anything on it

I think you will love it, you will have to weld the angle irons for the rumber to set in for support, it sets on the cross members. I will be hard pressed to use anything else from now on, it is an excellent use of recycled tires.

I had a tag trailer that had the diamond plating and it worked well, except when we have frost in the mornings, and or snow. It can be a little tricky to deal with steel tracks on it in these conditions, even boards can get really slick. Since we did our trailer with the rumber it hasn't been an issue.
