Hayes trucks in the logging industry

Hayes is known for an impressive list of "firsts" in logging truck design. To mention a few: dual axles, sself loading trailers, diesel engines, etc. I will start with a few Hayes HD model and then HDX. Post your vids and pictures of Hayes trucks.

Some HDX models. Picture #2 shows last built Hayes truck. Still going strong and many are, which brings me back to the Hayes motto"Last to Built".

Pics of HDX models. Pics #4 and #5 show ex M&B unit #H318 preloader from 1974. Now in operation under Lake Lemare Logging. Many Hayes trucks are converted in to a second or third life.

More HDX models. Picture #3 shows HFP unit #T456. Truck is not a logging truck anymore - it has been converted to some kind of trailerdolly/undercarriage for a Vancouver based company - Surespan. Hood and cab has been removed from truck. Picture #4 and #5 show HFP unit #T0721. Look at fenders. They are not the original ones. Fenders are from a set forward HDX model.

This lowbed truck was bought new by Curly Marshal and was truck #4 Then went from owner to owner and is now owned by a fellow down in Duncan I believe. He bought it at the RB Auction in Parksville last year and fixed it up and it was at the Duncan truck Show this year Hayesno1 and I went over her pretty good

Thanks HDX. Now I can recognize her when comparing pics from summer 2007(truck with lowbed) and summer 2010 when she was parked at The Duncan Truck show. I remember we went over her pretty good. We thought she was an old BCFP truck at the time I went into cab to get #sn but some how I lost track of my notes with #sn. As I recall she is from the early 60's.
Look at those stacks - they have been lengthened to look like real stacks

More HDX pictures. Pics 1 and 2 show Dystant HDX unit #22. Pic 3 is a LLL truck and 4 and 5 show ex MB units. Pic 5 is MB unit #H321 preloader from 1974. A contractor owns her at present time.

The truck pictured above (Pre-Load)Lee Hutton got unit # H321 brand new in Franklin River Division in 1974 an was her only driver right up till 2003 when Weyerheauser sold the entire Division to Hayes Forest Services and they got to cherry-pick the equipment they wanted. Unfortunatly they had no use for preloads and old H321 was sold to Danny LaRose and then to Dorman.Of the 12 preloads that were at Franklin only 2 survived here and are still running and have their original M&B unit numbers H14 --1989 P16 and H17 1975 HDX. One other preload is still there unit # H320 however Hayes Forest converted her to a conventional but she is still hauling logs with us. HFS scrapped H90 H91 and H316 all three were HDX Preloads.Can give more info if required

Thanks for information re owner of H321. Any information re Hayes has my interest- and hopefully others. I guess I am "insatiable". H321 came in a series of 6 units to MB all preloaders; numbered #H316 to #H321. They all had set forward axles. As far as I know only #H316 has been scrapped the rest are still going strong/parked. #H317 is working as a tractor for Surespan, Vancouver. #H318 present owner is LLL. Truck runs with a huge dump trailer. Re #H319 later HFP #T8158 I am not sure if it has been sold. As you mentioned HDX #H320 is still running with you guys. Re #H321 I think it might be at QCI, but Trackloader will know.

Those three trucks ( H320 H321 and H17) all preloads were driven by the same drivers for the longest period of time in M&B history-- Bob Dingsdale got H320 new and stayed on her for 27 years till he retired in 2001 and Lee Hutton with H321 till truck was sold out from under him in 2002 after 28 years and I still have H17 after 35 years. There was 6 trucks came new in 1974 and H17 came in 1975, When Franklin River Division got the 6 new preloads in 1974 our sister Division (CAMERON) just down the mainline got 4 new HDX Preloads also H88 H89 H90 H91 H88 was sold at a R/B Auction to Coulson Forest and they still have her although she is and has been parked for some years H89 was transferred to Shawnigan Division where they made her into a Conventional and was later sold to somebody else. Saw pictures of her and she looks great well looked after and she still sports the unit #H89 and like I said H90 H91 were both cut up.

I remember this before they ever tried putting the sand box on it. This pic. was taken in the late 90's at Sproat Lake Div. I remember it only as a log hauler.

These Smith sandbox's were a great thing when they first came out. At first they were 17 yard box's and were mounted on HD Hayes trucks. We got 4 in 1971 and were mounted on Unit H48--H38 --H97 and H102. In 1976 they were replaced with 24 yard Smith sandbox's and installed on the HDX's 2 were mounted permanantly on trucks and two were seasonal use box's 1 was a preload box and the one in Sarita was a drop over the bunk box. The 24 yard jobs would scare the hell out of you because the loader would heap the sand up as much as he could and the when you started sanding of coarse the box would be lifted an holy cow the center of balance was just too high. Interesting when up on top of a mountain and sanding away in the dark and one of the hoppers plugs up-although the exhaust was plumbed through the box it didnt always help. Smith moved their operations down to the States and are still doing great.Good to hear. Almost all the Smith box's that came to the Alberni Valley are long gone now. Our 17 yard box's were cut up by Budget Steel in the early 80s and the 24 yard jobs were all sold off. Now in the winter we go home if it snows or you take your chances with maybe a grader. Real fun stuff

They don't sand anymore? I remember a couple of HDX's with full loads on sliding down - with sanded roads - to their fates back in the late '70s. I just remember how the drivers would aim for the uphill side ditch in the hope of slowing their uncontrolled descent - it was amazing that the HDX's were that tough that they could be pulled out of the weeds with a cat, have their loads re-done by a loader and away they went again. It always seemed to be that they would leave us in the summer show for just a little bit too long and winter would catch us. The poor bugger driving the low bed with a grapple yarder on the back must have been crapping his pants.

So they don't sand anymore. I am a bit confused. I took these pics of MB H278 and H33 this summer at Cameron Div. IT - still having unit H33 - even got a new coat of paint. I think H33 was a preloader before she was converted but HDX knows for sure.

Hayes no1 Yes and no Those two sand trucks belong to Island Timberlands . They are the Northwest Bay crews that came to Port Alberni under the guise of "its all OUR WOOD NOW " so you guys can go home, We, the crews that had been logging there from the start and were kicked out of our own logging areas and roughly 130 guys instantly lost their jobs BUT those new guys sure as hell didnt lose anything. The survivors of the original crew ended up in the Sarita area of operation and thats where we work for now There is and always will be VERY hard feelings over this crap BUT all comes to he who waits and one day they will get theirs.KARMA MY FRIEND!!!! As for the HDX sandtruck that is parked there well it was a WAR TROPHY taken by NWB from Sproat Lake Division as with most other stuff. The H33 was always a NWB truck. NWB got to come up and cream all the equipment from Sproat and Cameron and Franklin Divisions before the entire outfit was given away NWB has two P16s and they were war trophys from Kelsey Bay Division when they switched over to highway trucks and gave away their fleet of 850 Kenworths and Pacifics. This was done to ensure that these divisions could never go back to off-highway trucks These trucks ended up scattered all over the coast and even into the oilfields of Alberta.IF you want I can send you a picture of that HDX sandtruck H278 on its side with a full load of sand right outside the Cameron Division gate seems it didnt even make it up the first little hill perhaps it was better there than over the bank somewhere but when it comes right down to it WHO CARES! BITTER---YOU BET!
