Modern Machinery (Dennis Washington) has bought out the Madill line. They plan on countining building parts for older Madill machines in B.C. The Kalama,WA plant was closed down.

Contract Logger said in another post, that they will also bulild you any machine you would like.

Heres a link to Modern Machinery's website.http://www.modernmachinery.com

That is unfortunate that they aren't manufacturing many new ones any more. Maybe I'm washed up but I always thought Madill built some of the best logging equipment out there.

Dead or Dying Madills in Hoonah Alaska.

I spent a few days last week on Prince of Wales island in Southeast Alaska. Saw the bones of lots of old Madill yarders scattered around in the weeds in he old campsites, etc. Here are a few shots taken last summer at Hoonah, of 009 wrecks.

Craig, Alaska Madill 009 Wrecks

Phoenix Logging at Craig is still using 5 or 6 009's, but has scrapped 4 in the last couple of years. Not much left but axles, drums, cabs and tubes sread through the weeds now.

Same location in Craig AK, Phoenix Logging boneyards. There's actually alot of intact equipment there also, spread all over the bushes.

It is too bad to see all of those old yarders sitting around and rusting away.

It sure shows of days gone by.

It's been years since I had heard of Phoenix logging and I'm surprised they made it through the shutdown of the Tongass.

Are they logging for the native corporations now?

:drinkup Two locations even, One at Grace Harbor on Dall Island, and another I think on the North end of Long Island, both on Sealaska Native Holdings.

Columbia Helicopters is still very active all over Southeast, along with a few other outfits. Viking Lumber has a big sale going (8 years logging or so), as well as a few others. Haidacorp has 4 sides working at Soda Bay and 12 Mile Arm, and Papac is on Sumez Island, and at Tolstoie near Kasaan.

Does Sealy still have the mill in Ketchican?

Is there anything happening on Prince of Wales?

It has been a bunch of years since I've been up that way. The last time I was up there was at Wrangell working on excavators for about a week. The fishermen wanted to trade wrench time for fishing time. There was a small logger on Prince of Wales that found out I was up there so I caught a beaver over and took care of that job also. I think that was 2003.

I'm glad some have adapted and kept on working.

Thanks again for the photos and the memories.

Madill 084 Swing Grapple Yarder Sales Spec Sheet

Here's a look at the Madill 084 drum and linepull specs. Only 3 of these were ever built; one was standard Madill paint (Chevrolet Orange and White), one was yellow and white, and the last one was painted 'Don Whitaker Logging' colors- black and white. These machines were very cumbersome on the M-10 tank chassis, and Whitaker (who now owns all 3) has taken them off the tanks and put them on Caterpillar 245 bottoms, much better for turning and traveling. Enjoy!
