Here ya go Wolf!

First series are of a Fire station we had to put a donut hole in. The histerical society demanded the penthouse remain unchanged so the GC had to get creative with his shoring.

Neat pictures Wawrecker. Looks like a pretty cool job. Why was the hysterical society getting so excited? What is so special about that firehouse? Looks pretty plain to me. Shoulda knocked the whole thing down. LOL.

Thanks for the pics, man.

Tell me again why was the hysterical society so interested in that firehouse? Looks pretty plain and boring to me. Nice demo shots though.

Have one in the works we are setting up for right now. 5 houses, one bank, and two condo buildings. Might have some issues with it now though. Original bid for the condos showed 500 sq feet of friable ACM. After being awarded the bid, we got a final ACM report, the condos have 26,000 sq feet. The bid is for a unit price, but being it is 20% more than the original contract, owner reserves the right to rebid, pull the building, or renegotiate the contract. They may very well pull the condos from the contract because the ACM removal cost will double the original bid price.

Turbo, in what form is the ACM - insulation, floor tiles? Do you guys do abatement in house or sub it? Sounds like an interesting demo.

They ACM is in a sprayed ceiling texture. It was not expected to be ACM that was friable. We do not do abatement in house, so if the job proceeds as planned, we have to find a sub that is willing to wait 6-12 months. That is due to a change order moving at the speed of DOT.

The project is actually at a border crossing. There is going to be a new truck inspection plaza built. In order to do this, the DOT is buying up several city blocks to make room. There have already been 50 or so buildings removed. This is phase II, with phase III phase IV and phase V to follow this year.

There is potential to make decent money. That is if the DOT real estate department can speed up getting clear titles and they get these let out for bid. I took a look at phase I last year, and all the houses were in decent shape. No one had been messing with anything yet. That was until the first houses started to go. In the last 6 months the little fire bugs have been torching houses. Two of the houses we are to wreck have been stripped out. They started at the hot water heaters, and chases all the copper to the fixtures. They even have started to remove all the wiring. They have also grabbed any aluminum siding, gutters, and soffit that they could easily reach.

why not suggest for the owner to make an own asbestos abatement contract if you dont have any asbestos abatement crew yourself?

Goofy question from a dirt monkey. Isnt it standard to fence off a half taken down building?

This job is a state DOT owned project. When you bid these projects, you bid lump sum quantities. The guy with the lowest lump sum wins the game. You bid based off of estimated quantities. So if the project goes over on quantity, you already have a price per unit. This company is new to the demo game, I am not. Therefore they have a minimal investment. In fact, instead of buying a cab guard for one of our machines, we will spend the cash to rent a machine that is already outfitted for the job. Which is better deal for me, new machine vs old machine, no brainer.

As for our own abatement crew. Ive been trying to push the office into this route. We are already an environmental company. Add abatement guys, and it opens the world to industrial demolition on the fast track. Team that up with a few riggers, and the right equipment, it could lead to a premier industrial services company.

A lot of the time it is. Most of the large demo jobs I have been on, have had the perimeter or the property is fenced off. Some times you improvise. Small jobs are the hard part. A lot of time, if it is something you can wreck in a day, you will leave it unfenced.

The asbestos is part of the decorative ceiling texture, like a "popcorn" ceiling? Was it used as some form of combination texture/fireproofing for the condos?

How many stories and what kind of construction for the condos - wood frame, concrete, steel?

The texture is a "popcorn" ceiling. It looks to be mainly a decrotive item. As for the construction of the condos. Wood frame, lightweight concrete floors, 3 stories. The first story is below ground more or less, with one side being a "walkout". Three buildings, 12 units each. All baseboard heat, so they are going to be a copper mine. That is if i can get there before the scrap hounds do. They have already picked over the houses we have to demo. Luckily the condos are fairly secure. So the plan is, as soon as we get a signed contract, we are going in to grab all the copper we can before the abatement guys get in there. It will be the only way we can save it.

My employer (county highway agency) bought 21 houses for a highway improvement project back in 2004?. We finally let a contract for the demo with only 2 or 3 to close on. By that time, we couldn't keep the unoccupied houses secured. Our guys would replace the boards over the windows and doors during the day and the houses would be wide open again by dark. If there was an occupied house next door, the boards might last overnight. By the time the houses were demo'd the siding was gone if it was aluminum, the fixtures gone, the copper gone, aluminum doors, and even cupboards and vanities. I've never seen anything like it.
