Thanks. Unfortunately, I did not snap the pic...

Ouch, lol...If only they weren't already the leader in construction equipment and mining truck sales... ... ... ... ...and didn't feel that mechanical drive is still the best option for most applications... ... ... ... ...then yes, it would already be hauling and making money.

The reply could be used for both arguments ....

My comments have no bearing on wether they lead anything! Why you would say that? .... puzzle's me!

Can you imagine how much money has been thrown into the electric drive project that is over a year behind? They havent even got any field follow machine's hauling real dirt yet. I wouldn't gamble my Word they will have them hauling by the end of 09!

You cannot enter and lead a market that you know nothing about.

And regard's to the leading the world statement? ..... The dont lead any Loading or hauling market here.

According to a press release, the AC Drive trucks will be phased into production late 2010. Whether that means full production, or production of field follow units, I'm not sure.

I still haven't quite figured out how those things work either (AC Drive units).

I think you'll find they know more about the market they are targeting than you give them credit for, this isn't their first foray into the electric drive market. The first attempt could have gone somewhere, but they backed out and walked away. I'm sure they don't intend to enter and lead from the start, but they sure can overtake it in a hurry when they get everything in order.

As for leading the world, I don't believe anyone said anything about the loading market, but they certainly do lead the hauling market in the rest of the world. Just remember, there is more to the world than your little valley.

You have to realise, for the first time in a long time, they have decided to get a product right for when they introduce it, instead of what they seem to do normally. That is, introduce something, and then see where it goes and develop the machines as they learn. I guess they might have finally figured out that approach still hasn't worked with their hoes.

If they had thrown them out into the field before they were ready, they wouldn't be hauling and making money, they would be sitting and costing money. Not to mention earning a poor reputation for being down all the time. I would also imagine that the economic downturn is not helping with all of the mining activity slowing down throughout the states. Doesn't make much sense to rush a product to a market that isn't going to buy it right now....does it?

That appears to be a different 795F than was on the convention floor in Las Vegas. Great to see another 795F photo! I like the size of the machine.

- Chris :)

The dump body does look different, as the MinExpo dump had decals. But that is most certainly the same truck.

I understand that your comment had no bearing on whether or not they led anything. My comment was to imply that Cat is comfortable with not hurrying an electric drive truck to market, as an ED lineup will only complement an already dominant mechanical drive lineup.

I know exactly how much money is being "dumped" into the project. And whether they have them hauling by the end of 2009 truly is of little importance. Remember the wheel motor issues with the Komatsu 960s? Field Development trucks sat around for what seemed to be an eternity while issues were sorted. Better that it happen during development than during production, but Cat can't afford those kinds of mistakes. Cat is trying to get away from fixing quality issues after releasing for production, so field development is critical. Komatsu has the ED truck market cornered at the moment, and it would be a huge folly for Cat to release a truck that isn't ready. While there are markets that are dominated by Cat (Newmont, BHPB), there are markets where Cat has little population (Rio Tinto). Customer acceptance of the technology isn't an issue. Acceptance of the technology bearing the Cat brand will be - especially if they don't commit to releasing a quality product.

And Alco said it very well. The biggest obstacle at the moment? economic downturn. Budget cuts will slow the release of this truck more so than development problems.

And let's remember, Cat was in this game before. It's also important to note that we don't have a bunch of rookie engineers working on this. Cat currently has many Komatsu and GE expats on their payroll. These guys know AC drive - they helped make it happen for Komatsu.

I'll also defer to Alco's wisdom regarding my "world leader" comment.

field development, What Field development? That was my point in the first post. They are Well Behind with Field Follow's. Big Mistake.

Iam Done talking about these truck's ... You can spin number's and theorys all you like but you are missing the point.

You Guys seem to know alot more about this than me? Care to tell the story?!

Look's like the Proto-Type Pictured. Few thing's give it away but you Guy's already knew that! (Alco's Probably driving it  )

Cat

Set back and listen and learn about these trucks. When it's right, Cat will get it done. Listening to all the new stuff Cat is coming with, Electric is in! Like that new D7 which will establish a whole new generation of dozers. How exciting it is to have all these new machines. Just can't wait for it to happen.

Not to mention the field follow machines and who knows how many more at the proving grounds.

There are no field follow machines yet, that's what the comments about Cat not getting things rolling so far have been about. The Tucson truck is the truck at the proving grounds, and i would assume the MinExpo truck is at the proving grounds as well now.
