Pretty good idea.
Yea, but it looks like something that would have been created by the kid from the move "Toy Story". You know, the one who disassembled all his toys and the reassembled the parts into all kinds of "mutant" toys...:eek2

I have seen one of these things in Portage la Praire Manitoba at a contractors yard. the only difference was that it had a set of Duel truck wheels on the back that were operated by hydraulic cylinder. allowing the packer drum to be picked up off the ground to cross a road or something.

I though it was a neet idea, but most contractors there still use a Dozer and pull a couple of shhepfoot packers or ahve gone to the Vibratory pad foot.

That thing has a younger brother, a 621B, that I saw around the St. Joseph Missouri area about 2-3 years ago. Scrapers get old and then you have to do something with them! I'll post a pic if I can ever find it again.

Ive seen a few DW10's and DW20's this way but had a drum on each rear wheel. Ive also seen this type of conversion to. Im thinkin about doing the same to the old 290 M Clark Im about to buy for other jobs. We just got done converting and old 518 Cat timber cutter into a Landfill compactor for the landfill I work at. Cat used to sell a conversion for the 518 skidder for dirt and landfills both just cost alot more. I need to post a few pics. We used the split front rollers off a old Gallion roller for the wheels then added spikes and choppers. And a Blade off a 290 Clark. Its a bad looking monster.

Here is a link to a model of the DW20A Hyster Super Packer. The real thing exists, there is a company in Lincoln, Nebraska that has one. Still used too. If I can find my pics of it I'll post them .
I saw a Michigan 180 wheel dozer converted into a compactor in Pheonix, Arizona a few years ago. The last issue of Classic Plant had an article on Massey Ferguson compactors converted from their wheel loader line too.

Hi yall im new 2 the fourm & been around construction all my life . wouldnt imagine having a office job ;)

That would be a rare piece of equipment around here id rather run a self propelled or a 815 Cat or a fram tractor & sheepfoot roller looks like they chooped off a 621 or 623 & created a mutant . ;)

that looks more rough riding than a paddle wheel or regualar self propelled scraper

I ran a C wabco sheepsfoot compactor for a while it was very rough riding if the scraper guys didn't lay it down good, also every time you turn sharp it nosed over, and that got old real fast

Blackwells in England had several of these Hyster rolls pulled by DW21's,last year they were taken in to their workshops and the dw's were cut off and some tractors off 627A's and a 621 were welded on as these had ROPS etc.

Apparently there is nothing to touch these old Hyster rolls for compaction.
Some of the english guys may be more up to speed on this one than me maybe they could comment?

I had to replace a hyd pump on one of those dw20 converted rollers a couple years back. that SOB was the roughest ride ever, I am talking D8K on concrete did not compete to this thing. anything over 1 st gear at idle would bounce your eyeballs and cause your eyes to water.

It's a wonder the old timers lasted as long as they did.

The concept is very intersesting. Somebody knows who built the largest sheep foot roller ? The Power-packer M50-55 by RG Letourneau is the biggest I've found. In the book "Letourneau earthmovers" by Eric Orleman, I read there was a largest Letourneau prototype called M60-55 with a dozer blade. Do you know of other large self propelled sheep foot roller as big as the Letourneau Power-packer? Photos are welcome.
