Barely, like depending on the day it's maybe 10-20 seconds sooner. It generally sticks around 170 on a normal day of not working too hard. The temps do seem low as that seems to be normal operating temp for other diesels i've had.

Have you checked the sender for the overheat light?

No, can't say I know where it is even. Will have to see if I can find it.

Should also check the engine temp with a temp gun, sounds like your guage is wrong

Yea I am going to just to get an idea if it's right or not. I've seen 215 a few times on really hot days. It doesn't act wonky or anything, but it could be off.

It would be funny, if it turns out that the 30 year old instrumentation is inaccurate.

5080C2E2-093B-48DB-BC08-3408CF903D7D.jpeg Pretty much got it back together today, started putting coolant back in and block heater plug started to leak so I said fawk it for the day and left, no idea why it's leaking now, I never touched it. What a pain in the a$$ to put back though with parts have to go back in certain order and no room to work, I think I spent about 6 hours on it. Here is what the oil cooler looked like, not clean but not anywhere as bad as that picture.

Well there you go! That is definitely plugged. Should be able to clean it by blowing backwards through it.
I wonder how long we would have gone in circles on this if you hadn’t posted that picture?

Gonna throw this out there, see who chews it up. Radiator from KW had failing insert fins between the tubes, they get to a corroded level make poor contact to the tubes so lose the Heat Sink, my radiator they were crumbling as well. Rad Shop guy noted they were well beyond where could get much of any cooling thru the core, perhaps 20-30% functional heat sink where was re-cored. Look at core at ends where meets tanks for degradation of the thin copper fins and how much from there into body of core are that way. Could be not blocked tubes but piddly poor heat sink capability. Will not transfer much heat if tubes have no additional heat sink.

Never seen that in trucks, but I've seen plenty of cars with fins falling off like hair on a melted roadkill coon. That would show up as low temperature drop of the coolant through the radiator, UNLESS the inside of the tubes was equally blocked so you had equally reduced water and air flow.

Well an update on this, after getting it all back together and starting it, and the oil cooler leaking oil I gave up and am having the guy I share shop space tear it back apart to fix it. Beyond fed up with it, I know it's a lot my fault for not doing seals but what a pain in the a$$. I have no idea why but I didn't replace any seals on the oil cooler. He's also going to check the water pump just to make sure it's fine.

I really don't know why I even bothered touching it to begin with, he charges me $110-$120/hr can't remember exactly, I make more then that running my equipment and am busy, i'm way better off letting him fix it properly and quicker then I ever could.

Well my screw up was o-ring didn't seat properly and to make it worse, cracked the part, $500 for a used one. It's all back together and said it's working fine, haven't seen the bill but know it will be well over $1000 all over $20 worth of o rings. Needless to say, I won't be touching anything engine related on the truck again, if I have an issue i'll just let him fix it.
