Also had a couple 8V-71 that broke cranks. Funny thing is they would still run with a bit extra vibration! One was in a IR Drill rig and the other was a PTO engine running a crusher. A little hard on the lower mains and the block!

Years ago--A guy had me tow a K100 to a Kenworth dealer, didn't want it dropped in their
yard, dropped it 6 blocks away. He rolled a set of bearings in on a broken crank {92}.
He had already traded it on a new W900.

One of the films we saw while going to apprenticeship training was on detroit diesel governors. It was an old Gray Marine film- kind of scratchy and well used. It was obviously made during ww2 and showed the engine in a landing craft.

What Gray Marine did was set up the engines for marine use. They installed marine coolers and raw water pumps plus wet exhausts. Lots of amphibious craft got keel coolers instead of the sea water systems. The engines were still manufactured by General Motors Corporation.

When you think about the manufacturing run from the thirties until the seventies or eighties, can you think of any other engines that have been manufactured for that amount of time?

As far as tractors, the Ferguson system used today is basically the same as used on tractors starting in 1939. There are still thousands of Ferguson and 8N's still being used. Improvements were made over the years as well as going back to a simpler system but the basic tractor and 3pt. hitch/PTO is the same and is likely to carry on for many more decades. What isn't clear is if tractors will all have to go electric and how that will change implements.

Well, I wonder how many minutes you could chop corn for silage , before the battery in your tractor gives out. Maybe they can put extra batteries on a trailer to pull along with the chopper. :)
