Cat sold more D4, 5, 6 crawlers here than anywhere, International too. Wheat farms around here could
have had as many as five or six depending on how much ground they farmed. Because of the steep
hill sides and the need to not pack the ground wheel tractors were only good on the flats. When rubber
band machines like Cat Challenger came along many of these just got parked behind the barn. But there
are a lot of farms that still use D6's because the simple fact it's just extremely reliable.

No market for them anymore or it's very thin. Plus it's a little late in my broken down
health to start something like that. But the shop I work in was originally a crawler
shop. The rail road rails are still in the floor to run the tracks on and you can see
where the jib crane was from the cut off bolts in the floor.

The floor of that market is about $2,500 for a running machine that will move itself onto a trailer. There are some people that will pay a lot of money for an old D2 that has been restored to near new condition. Those machines sit in multi-million dollar buildings and few people get to admire them.
The machines were built for commercial operations and have to earn their keep. Those operations no longer exist so it's time to go to the scrapper to be remade into something useful again.

Sometime in the future I plan making a video of a cat and or a combine working
a steep hill side. Viewed from the cab. Not many have any idea just how steep
the ground is around here that is farmed. When the leveler on the bine reaches
max and your a little past that-things start getting pretty tight.

That would be awesome to have. It’s amazing what they were doing back then.
