I had to replace a perfectly good turbo because the VGT was bad and that's a while can of worms to replace on its own, it's cheaper to to replace the whole thing.

Talked with a former employee of my current employer, he told me the GM stopped and said it was the first time in 10 years all the equipment was up and working, even the owners passed word down how much they liked his work, he was let go shortly after for attendance issues.

Vtech do you report to the mechanic or a manager?

Speaking of turbos, dealership "master tech" who does side work just replaced turbos on my mom's ram, first problem was he didn't bleed the system of air when putting back in coolant causing issues, now yesterday I get a call it's pissing coolant out like crazy under passenger side. Heater core hose popped off because hose clamp not on properly. Baffles me how someone can work full-time at a dealership working on this stuff all day and still screw up such simple things.

Because he’s the new breed where “getting it done fast” is the only thing that matters.

Fella worked here. Really good mechanic, and a heck of a nice fella. He was a Native so he has dual citizenship between Canada and the US. He joined the United States Marines after high school. Did did desert storm and the likes. He got his trade through them, and after however many years, he came back home. His mom had passed, and he came back to work the next Monday after the funeral. Put a clutch in one of the trucks. The truck headed out to work. After an hour or so, a vibration came, and the clutch was not working right. He was handy to the shop where my father worked, so he went in, and my father checked it out. He had only put all the bellhousing bolts in finger tight, and a lot of them had fallen out. He took the week off, and then came back without issue. Ended up going to Alberta for oil money.

Turbo actuator $700
Turbo $3000

Superintendents are the ones that call me. Once I am finished with a job, I will let them know I'm done, and the machine is ready to use. I rarely have communication with the owner anymore since he travels between Arizona and here. The owner made it clear years ago that I was the only one to do anything to paving equipment outside of the dealer. It still stands today.
The dirt supers call HNC, I'm not sure what happens after that. I know he doesn't call me..........and I'm betting he feels threatened which is why I don't hear from him. Thats why nothing seems to get done which is frustrating

[QUOTE=" How does a company like this not have the resources to hire competent people. [/QUOTE]

Maybe because they went from paying one owner's well-earned salary to paying three marginally-if-it-at-all-earned salaries? Rags to rags in 3 generations.

Well, this is what I've seen and heard........which may answer some of that question.

1. Of the 2 sons and sil, only one has any experience in this field, and his is limited to bidding work mainly. The oldest son was/is a private jet pilot, the sil was in pharma before this gig.
2. The new trucks are abound throughout the business......especially for the top 3. $100K +trucks WTF?
3. I was told by a super last month that the company now has an airplane ( absolutely no reason for one, but they HAVE one.)
4. I asked about some old equipment in the yard that has needed to be sold or scrapped for years now. I was told they can't get rid of anything because they have borrowed money against everything. Thats what a $20M loan does to you.
5. Super high turnover rate in employees across the board. Mostly super's on down.
6. They went from an office space that had been theirs for multiple years and paid for to an office space downtown leased for $10k+ a month. The only reason I can think of is for image purposes.
7. Not holding the manager/mechanic accountable. This comes from not even knowing what to expect from management that doesn't know the business.
8. Equipment not being repaired until its down and no pm. If something cant be repaired quick (which is the case 90% of the time) they go and rent something to replace it. That cost alone is ridiculous.
9. Buying parts without regard to price. No shopping is performed because they don't know how to do it. The dealers are taking huge advantage of this.
9. When they do buy replacement equipment, they just trade off older stuff at whatever trade value the dealer throws at them. I've watched them get F^%&ed bigtime here.
10. An owner that is disconnected from the company. Yes, he is still in and out and has some say so, .......but he isn't paying enough attention to what has been going on, and letting his family bleed the company for personal gains.

I have seen this numerous times over my life in this business. The original owner retires, lets the family take over, and before you realize what's happened....the company goes under. Regardless of the ol saying "Too big to fail"....yeah, that isn't true.

I was told by the main asphalt super that the company has bought out a smaller one in OKC. He wants to send them the oldest Weiler paver, the Bomag miller, and the new Cat 622. I am to repair everything all of that needs so they can be ready to deliver by the end of this month. Is this the reason for the $20M loan? Maybe, I have no idea.

I have never had a problem getting paid from these people. The asphalt side of the company is where most of my work for them comes from...............and I am told it is still separate from the dirt side. The checks are still good, but I will have to watch how much I invest in them moving forward. If I get too into them and there is a sudden bankruptcy, it could pull me under with them.

Where I am, the old fella started the company in the 40s. The son ran it into the ground from unwise business moves, big spending, and heavy drinking. In one season he bought like 25 new loaders, then he built a shop that would hold every piece of gear they had in it. His son, the owner today, came home from living away, and went to work rebuilding what was left. The government bought their shop for a highways depot, sold off 2 asphalt plants, and called in a few favors from other contractors. Today they are sucessful and financially secure. One of the brothers 2 sons are now assuming managing rolls, but they have been working in the company since they were teens. They have worked every angle. Hopefully they can keep things going. At least 15 more years anyway.

I knew this day wasn't going to go well after I ran into this when I left home this morning........

This idiot driver apparently decided he was going the wrong direction. He then proceeds to attempt a turn around right in the middle of Route 66. If he would have driven 2 more miles there was plenty of places to make a u turn. His dumbass got stuck right where you see him since we had 5 inches of snow melt the last few days.

Around here, they groom the snowmobile trails, and they look like roads. upload_2022-2-7_20-46-46.jpeg
