With flowing water, we wait until they cross, then mark that spot and keep moving ahead, when they open, the distance between the two is the depth of the line in the ground, thats also pretty accurate, if you have someone that can "witch" out the lines, provided there's not too much ground water in to interfere with the line your trying to find.
