I stopped by a local scale shop to pickup some portable truck scales and saw something cool. So I hope these guys don't mind me posting a pic of their rig, but thought you guys might like to see this. Super clean 359 or 379 Pete (you guys might know just looking at it) with a crane body on it. I was drooling when I saw it... crappy angled pictures sorry

Fellow running that 46 wouldn't be an older gentleman I might know who 14 15 years ago took his 46 swimming getting gravel out of a pit would it.

This will be my new setup in a few weeks. Just need to get the welder mounted up, oil recovery and a few little odds and ends, then it'll go for a full wrap and I can move in!

And a pic of the old rig that I'm currently working out of.

That new rig looks sweet. Kind of a different configuration of the service body layout. What are you going to use the space between the crane tower and forward driverside compartments?

It's a service deck or "mech" deck sometimes they call them, maybe it's more common up here. The space between usually houses reels, fire extinguisher etc. The back deck portion is nice for loading up pails, drums, large components etc. The rest of the body is all enclosed, welder will be mounted on top of curb side cabinets. The back deck also doubles as a big ass work bench, the sides all drop down for straight access loading, working etc.

Yea I like that. Post some pictures of the curb side!

All the pics of my new truck are just the generic ones off the dealer's website. My truck is pretty much identical, except my d-side #1 and #2 cabinets both have drawer units and the doors open away from each other for easier tool box access. Also got bolt bins drawers on the p-side #3 cabinet.

Got my new Miller Air Pak mounted up today, had to spend some time dicking around with the oxy/ace cabinet top vent cause the welder interfered with it otherwise. Need to mount and plumb the air tank in, build an oil recovery system and get a full wrap on the truck.

Lots of awesome and unique trucks in this thread! I especially like the self built rigs and the repurposed chassis. One thing that I've read here a few times and makes me feel better is "no rig is ever finished." That applies to both of mine big time haha

My two 4x4 cornbinders:
White 1999 4800 was a low mileage bucket truck I converted in 10 days. Its not fancy but it works very well. Its been all over western and northern Canada. 84" CA, DT466e, 6 spd eaton, Fabco 4x4, 6206 Cobra crane, 60cfm autocrane screw, previously had lincoln commander 500 welder, now ranger 250, modified reading utility body.

Black 2007 7500 is my custom built dream truck. Was a low mileage schlumberger oil patch cement mixer, I shortened wheelbase, refurbished, painted, new wide base tires and wheels, 92" CA, HT570 engine, 10 spd eaton, Meritor 4x4, 12000 cobra crane, 60cfm VMAC hyd drive screw, Lincoln Commander 500 welder, waste oil, tons of draws, lights, cabinet heat, slide out burn table, cylinder tear down pockets, body custom built to my specs by Fabcan Metalworks in Prince George, BC. Works very well, would build again lol.

Thanks, I guess I dont really have better pics of the cargo area. The doghouse over the cargo area is built out of aluminum, its bolted and sealed to the top of the cabinets, the opening lid is on gas struts, but flips open completely if you remove the struts to allow loading. I wanted a sliding roof to facilitate loading things with the crane, but haven't missed it. With the 500 amp welder and a waste oil tank and a hydraulic tank, theres only a 13" wide area the whole way to the cab to load cargo haha. One thing that I might have done differently is the 4 stainless panels that slide in to form a barrier. They offer the most versatility but half doors and a tailgate would let me into the cargo area faster. I didnt do full barn doors because anything in the open deck area would have stopped them from opening, even snow or ice in the winter would be a pain. The white truck has an open cargo area and it turns into a gross mess in the winter.

What kind of service body is that? I like the large deck space for cargo.

It's a Work Truck West service deck. Brutus and Accurate Truck Body also make their own versions as well. Some guys like the full length cabinets for space. I like the deck, good for large/awkward components, doubles as a nice work bench. I've been working out of a slightly smaller service deck with a worse cabinet layout and smaller enclosed space and haven't been hurting for space yet. Mind you I've only been in the field full time for a year, been in the trade for about 3.5 years, 5 years in aviation prior to this.

Dmec you got a real nice setup! How long have you been independent? That was always my goal one day, I like seeing the independent guys' setups too and seeing what experienced mechanics prefer especially up here. Seems most the guys down south of the border run open top bodies.
