Yes, all XHP machines are high flow. The 2012 299D XHP was the first generation of the D series from CAT. It is a Tier 4 interim machine. It has a DPF, but does require DEF fluid.
According to the owners manual there is a service interval on the DPF. The DPF must be cleaned or replaced every 3000 hours or every five years. I am not sure how many people are actually having that service performed or how much it might cost. It is something to think about as a 2012 model machine would be 5 years old this year.
The biggest issue with DPF systems comes from excessive idling. The DPF likes to stay hot and it can't do that when the machine is sitting and idling. If the machine is being worked then the DPF regeneration will happen passively and you will never know it is happening. If the machine idles a lot it may go into an active regeneration where the idle speed will be bumped up so that the temps can get high enough for the regeneration to take place.
We have a fleet of various Cat skid steers. Honestly we don't have much trouble with the emissions systems (actually most of our Cat fleet has had relatively few emission issues) aside from cleaning the DPF when its due or a couple stuck EGR valves.
