The starter on my 3500 Ditch Witch trencher crapped out, went to Nappa got a replacement that appeared to match the one I removed. Napa kept the old core. the new starter fit up fine, when I started it the casted cover over the end gear snapped off. So I decided I needed OEM parts... looked up the starter in the model's owners manual... there are 3 possible starters depending on the S/N. I have been all over the machine, there is no S/N plate.

Any ideas on identifying the correct starter for the repair?
