    Trying to save a Hough 65 from the scrap yard

    I found a 1974 Hough 65 in my town the loader has sat for about 3-4 years. I was able to get it running today but won't move the oil level is ok. The one thing I noticed is that the driveshaft coming off the back of the motor to the transmission stop spinning when you try to put it in gear. I'm not really too familiar with the style of machine and cannot find too much information on the Internet any help would be appreciated.

    Guessing you have a torque converter attached to the engine. That may have a separate oil supply from the transmission. Maybe also a broken drive coupling to the torque converter, or an oil pump stripped out possibly, except the trans seems to be working.

    Been many years since I worked on a Hough and all them were the larger machines 100 and up. Can not recall if the transmission oil level is checked with engine running or off, might be something to check into. Some machines have fiber couplers on the flywheel that drive the converter, those do tend to fail at times.

    They used to be the go to place for used Hough parts there is a chance they might have a manual on this machine or know of someone who would.

    The drive shaft from the engine should stop spinning if the loader is in gear but not moving. Have you checked the oil level in the torque converter?

    I have a 65C. Drive shaft stops when you put trans in gear. Will it try to move if you open throttle wide open? Check oil level at dipstick while engine is idling.
    There is also one of the pumps on the torque converter housing that charges the converter. Also change the filter on the left inside frame behind transmission.

    I checked the oil level in the transmission before I stared it and was on the full mark I wasn't sure if I needed to be running.do you know what it takes for oil? Is there a separate dipstick for the torque converter oil?

    We always checked our H90 while running. Our local Komastu guy said 15-40w for the tranny, but the previous owner ran it for years with Hydraulic oil.

    What color is the oil in there? Not any kind of guarantee the last guy used the right oil but at least might give a hint at what is in there right now.

    Like I said above been years since I worked on any Houghs and those were H90's and above, but seems like we always used ATF Dexron oil the red stuff. If this 65 is anything like the larger machines the transmission and converter all work off the oil in the sump of the transmission. Should be a large hose from near the bottom of the transmission to a pump on the converter.

    Any chance of a couple pictures of the transmission / converter area of this machine? Might give an idea if it is similar to the larger ones and let someone point out something.

    My book says to use Dexron ATF. I however use UTF and have no problems. One dipstick for system. Everything comes from the trans sump.

    Yeah Dexron III ATF is what I've been using in my 1963 Hough H 50 B for the last 15 years I've had it, and the guy before me used that as well. I am guessing that's a P 600 transmission. They are very tough transmissions and very forgiving on whatever type of fluid you put in though. We always check it at idle in neutral after its been worked for a good hour or so, that gives the best reading. Mine only has one dipstick for the transmission/converter. Maybe there is restriction with the fluid somewhere, sump screen clogged or the filter. What are the temperature gauges reading for the transmission and converter if they still work?
