    Cat 963 C track adjuster help

    Have a 963c bbd prefix was troubleshooting track adjusters on both sides of machine found both sides with recoil pin broken and other broke in half but swtill holding what is the best safest way to repair????

    What are you calling the recoil pin? Can you post some pics? How far out are the adjuster rods extended?

    both track adjusters are tilted sideways and will not hold pressure for over an hour, the pins are under the plate where you pump out the track adjusters and hold the recoil springs in both sides have one broke and the left side only has half a pin holding it in

    Still need some pics, and need to post once more before you can upload. From the sounds of without pics, I'm leaning toward cutting the springs to get them out and then full rebuild

    Is it possible to post a pic from further away so that it gives an idea what we're looking at..?
    I think I know what that is in the photo in post #5 but I'm not 100% sure.
    I'd love to see things from your perspective but unfortunately....... I find it impossible to get my head that far up my a$$.

    no that is the only pic i got not around machine that is the plate with 4 bolts that hold it down so you can gain access to grease fitting to pump out the track
    right behind the idler on top of the roller frame the adjuster has turned and broke the nipple off the fitting to pump out the track

    you have to compress the spring in order to replace the pins.
    requires special adapters and tooling to do it safely
    hopefully the pins arnt frozen

    That looks like the old style adjuster like on my 943. I thought the 63C had an oval shaper plate that had two bolts the covered the zerk for the adjuster. If possible get some more pics and post up the s/n if you haven't yet. If the pins that retain the spring are worn You may need to remove the roller frame and take it to a qualified service tech. As you may know , that spring is under several tons of pressure and can cause loss of limb or death.

    yea the zerk fitting has a plate around it with two bolts but the adjuster has turned in the frame due to the pins being broke

    If the chrome rod is angled down or in a weird fashion , it could be adjusted so far out that it is past the rear bushing that holds the adjustment rod. These can be disassembled and rebuilt on the tractor. But if what your saying the retaining pins are broken , the springs have to be addressed for safety reasons. If you can post up some pics of the adjuster and the angle its in. It is not uncommon for the chrome adjustment rod to get out of the rear bushing and look like its broken. How many hours and how are the rails?

    I replaced these pins in a 973C about 8-10 months ago. It had one broken in three pieces.
    We didn't know it was broken until the track, idler, and adjuster had been removed to do an undercarriage job.

    To answer your question, the safest way to replace them is to have the Cat dealer or someone with the tooling that is shown in the disassembly and assembly manual do it. And follow the procedure in the book.

    Recoil springs must be respected at all times, they can cause serious injury or death as someone mentioned above.
