    Angry D5H Fuel problem

    I ran my machine out of fuel on a steep slope......This machine does not have a manual pump on the fuel filter so, I put an inner tube on the tank fill tube and pressurized the tank. I was able to get fuel back into the injector pump but am still having trouble getting it to start......I can get fuel up to three injectors but the last injector at the front of the motor is still dry. I have cracked the line at the pump and it is dry there also. It almost started on three cylinders but, the battery went dead. Is it possible that my injector pump my be bad? It has been a slow to rev machine. It runs smooth but, lacks the pick-up. I bought it at auction and haven't had it long.

    Continue the bleeding after you recharge the battery(ies). Sounds like you just about have it bled. I highly doubt that the injection pump went bad. What condition is the fuel tank in? Any dirt, rust or other contaminates. This may be a good time to replace the fuel filter(s) as well.

    The company that I work for had a 941 Cat that was a real PAIN IN THE A** to bleed the injector line on. I had to get atleast three of the four filled in order to get it running a little.

    Another time that I was PMing a skid steer I didn't purge the fuel system enough before I shut the engine off. I bled this piece for what seemed two hours and three battery charges. I gave up and called for a field mechanic. After not even two minutes he had it running. I just didn't hang in there enough to bleed the lines.

    one thing further.. try to crack the line on the injector end. This is what I was doing to the skid steer (on the pump end).

    It's not in the most accessible location.....4 wheeler only on steep hill with lots of brush and ruts.....got to haul the charger and a generator down to it......oh It's a good thing that this is just my machine on my property and I'm not under a time schedule

    Fuel Boogeyman

    There are several trouble points on a D5 fuel system.

    Take the fuel line off below the transfer pump. ( the one with the pump on it).
    You have gravity feed to that point and a screen at that banjo valve.

    If there is no fuel flowing out of that hose and the screen is clean, the problem is at the tank exit, the fuel/ water seperator or in the line. It takes less trash on that screen to interrupt fuel flow than you would imagine.

    Another trouble point is the water seperator. Even if it is clean, Cat was not consistent in the elevation they installed the seperator and some seperators are installed so high that they do not maintain downhill fuel flow when you walk in steep hills.

    Remember, there is a gasket at the entrance to the fuel filter which may be absent.

    Lastly, on the fuel return line, there is a valve which maintains fuel pressure. If it is absent it will allow the tractor to run but not maintain power. Cat left some of these off 99 models, and maybe others of which I am unaware.

    Make sure the transfer pump is OK, does it pump fuel when you use it?

    If you're getting fuel and none of these suggestions work, have Cat pressure test the fuel pump.

    Good Luck, fuel system hassels are the pits.

    Well Cat didn't have any good ideas on this machine......there is no hand primer so I had to force the fuel up into the injectors. I cut an innertube up and clamped it around the fill spout of the tank. Added about 10 lbs. pressure and cracked the injectors. I had to keep adding pressure as the fuel pushed its way thru. This idea worked very well. After about an hour of cranking and bleeding and adding air. She cranked up......Wanna bet that machine will never get less than half empty again?

    quick question.. i know its already to late.. i dont read the board to much any more.. but isnt the system pressurized.. for some reason im thinking there are..
    thats what helps feed the fuel.. so if this is true.. it could mean you have a leak of some sort some where.. in the system.. and again i could be full of my self.. i dont rember.. but for some reason after reading this that tad bit of info popped into my head not sure why.

    it's been awhile since i've put my hands on a newer cat machine,but,can't see the basic designs changing much.sorry to hear that your cat dealer couldn't help.i was a cat mechanic in the 80's,and "no answer" was unacceptable.
    first-did you try new fuel filters?low fuel,or extreme angles can draw contaminates off the bottom of the tank,inline screens,and severe angles of the fuel supply line(places where steel tubes change direction,or hoses transition to tubes) need to be cleared.
    second-check fuel pressure.sounds harder than it is.cat always places a tap point between filter and pump,and cat transfer pumps while usually sturdy,will die without notice.
    third-try disconnecting the fuel line as close to the engine as possible,and run a hose to a CLEAN 5 gallon bucket of fuel,this will eliminate possible air leaks to the supply.place you external line berfore the transfer pump,and high enough to produce a siphon effect.if this solves your problem,check for rubbed lines,or broke pickup tube in the tank.

    An old farmer trick for next time. Pull both filters, dowse a clean rag in gasoline and hold over air inlet and have someone crank it. Only block off half the inlet and don't let go of the rag. works for my Perkins and my d4h.
