    Oil for my 580K

    Hey Guys,
    I bought a 580K Backhoe , 1990 , runs great ( 4100 hrs )

I picked up some oil , I just wanted to check with youz guyz first...

    I bought a PDF / CD with 1300 pages on the 580K for $9 bucks ( Great Buy )

it says the type of oil needs to at least meet - API engine oil service category "CE"

    I bought "Rotella T" - 15w-40

    It doesn't mention "CE"

But I'm thinking this exceeds the standard ???

    Here's the API rating...

    Meets CJ-4 , CI-4 plus , CH-4 , CG , CF-4 , CF/sm

and finally... in the round API seal... it sez CJ-4SM

    .
    .
I don't have "History" on this machine... dates were written on filters...

I just wanted to hear something that sez I should be alright with this oil...

By the way... great forum , I build Experimental Aircraft , I have some forums of my own and site administrator to others...

These are great ways to find the knowledge it takes...

Thanks in advance for any advice or help !

We use the delo and it says CJ - I believe the CE was the spec at the time - not sure what to do in these cases, the hotrodders and their gas engines are wining the reduction in the zinc to keep the emission system lasting longer is wearing out there internal parts like cams and some of our V10 ford buddies have rod knocks and horrid bearings....
I change it at the 150 to 200 hour time frame.

Maybe you could consult with a specialty lube company and let us know if we are sliding into a compromise with these new oils on old machines?

The guy I was talking with about this was mentioning the Zinc issue...

This is also "new to me"...

There's a LOT of knowledgeable people on this forum...

I'm sure the answer is just around the corner...

The cj-4 is the oil that the engines that are desined to run ultra-low sulfer diesel and exceeds the CE specs from the 90's . One thing you might watch out for, because you dont know what oil was ran in it before now, is that the Rottela kas a very high detergant package in it and mac cause the oil filter to plug up prematurly. Just a heads up, you might want to change the oil filter after about 100 hours

    Thanks for the "Heads Up"....

    Yeah,
Not knowing the existing oil is a Bear...

I've heard of problems using a high detergent oil ....

I figured the "J" was better than the "E"... ( But not positive )

I might consider changing everything sooner than 100 hrs...

I'm not using it THAT much.... Biggest project I have "lined up" is clearing a "Runway" for my Planes...

A few trees to remove... some dirt to shuffle around...

    CE became obsolete in 1985,

Rotella will work great for what you need.
