Sounds like you have a fascinating little problem there Garrie.
I read your earlier description and I'm a bit confused. In the above post you say "...move the forward reverse selector arm the machine goes into the opposite direction...". That sounds like the response you expect when you move the reverse selector but your earlier post talks about moving the gear select reversing the direction which is definitely not right!
Just to clarify; If you are going forwards, disengage the clutch ( I push forward on mine to do this?), stop, leave the forward/reverse selector alone, and change from 1st to 2nd, the machine will now go backwards? If it does, does it go backwards at about the same speed as it was going forwards before or lot's faster?

Nutwood, thats exactly what she does same speed,no change and yes my 70ci dessengages when you push the engagement lever backwards, pushing the lever forward engages.

Sounds to me that you have a tractor gearbox and you're engaging reverse. The tractors didn't have a reverser box and had a reverse gear in the gearbox. Mine is lacking the necessary shaft and gear in the box to reverse direction but you can see where they should be.
What is your shift pattern on the gear box?
Regarding the clutch; that's another difference. When I push my clutch lever forward, in the direction of travel, it first disengages the clutch and then it activates a little brake in the clutch housing that stops the front shaft of the gearbox (reverser actually) spinning, thus allowing a smooth shift. I replaced that little brake recently which was a fun exercise that I intend to write up for this forum.
I think I'd find my machine quite hard to drive if the clutch action was reversed as I have to lean forward to reach the full travel forward, whereas I sit back in the seat and work the master clutch and the hydraulics quite comfortably. Again it sounds like a tractor modification with a different pivot arrangement.

Nutwood. I think you may well be onto somethingthere (as Usual) Im heading back up home on weeked and will check your theory. I have to change the blade spindles on the ride on cutter deck that the old girl likes to use as HER dozer,(Might have to re-think selling the other old girl after all).Ill let you know what the g-box pattern on the stick is, as per the clutch engagement mine engages slowly as you apply forward pressure until it lockks on havent had a problem with that.

I suppose it's just what you get used to. Actually I can see advantages, in that I sometimes have problems with the scenery trying to climb aboard and help me drive. If the lever action was reversed this'd disengage the clutch rather than jam it engaged....

Nutwood, I think it may be you that has the modified clutch.
I haven't operated a 70ci but I have driven several AT7s ,which are essentially the same tractor, and they have all had the same clutch setup as Garrie's.
    Cheers, Greg

I think you may be right Greg. I've been investigating and indeed my clutch should work the other way. Apparently they are sometimes modified so as to be the same as a Cat. This is the only Fiat I've driven so I've never questioned it. Funny thing is that the bloke I bought it from, who was a long term Fiat man, never mentioned it. He probably did it as a standard modification on all his machines.
There you go, learn something every day. Thanks!!
