    Extendahoe?

New owner and first back hoe. Made a very rookie mistake. Pulling some old stumps out, first 2 very close no prib. Last 1 was a reach, extendahoe all the way out pulled stump and damaged ram. Is it real hard to remove. Looks a pain in the a$$.

First time extendahoe removal can be a bit of a task. How do you know if ram is damaged if you can't see it? Maybe a blown hose or cylinder seals?
A make & model of your machine will get you the more precise help.

when using the machine to pull stumps, I always used to put on a narrow bucket and give the roots a good ripping before removing the stump. If you cannot do that, I always used to lock the extendahoe before any serious pulling

Sorry , Mid 70 case 580c ,Buddy knows alittle bout them he caped off lines to cyl. and tryed pushing on extendahoe lever and it bogged down so valve is good, he said real common for some nut on cyl, to come off and letting fluid by-pass

The only nut I know of, on the inside of a cylinder, would be to hold the piston to the rod. If that came off the extendahoe would drift uncontrolably (at least in one direction). What has happened that has you thinking it's damaged(describe symptoms please)? IMO R&R of the extension cylinder is easier if you have another machine (or something else to do some hoisting).

Extendahoe would not go in at all. With hoses disconnected we were able to get it back in with the weight of the machine. caped off lines and tryed to operate extend and the motor would bog down like it was trying to push fluid. So that says the valve is working. Hooked hoses back up and nothing. Motor slowed very little so were guessing fluid is by passing through cylinder?Had to chain hoe up or it will just slowly go back out on its own.

The fact that it's going slowly indicates, to me anyway, that the nut is still attached. I think you have a blown seal at the piston because it is drifting slowly in both directions.

Buddy said depending on what is wrong with cylinder to repair it could be any where from 300 to 1200 to fix. Either way total cost to fix would be defently less than$1500 inclucing R&R . Sound fair?

In answer to your opening question:

IIRC, yeah, it's kinda labor intensive. You need to drop the whole slide assembly off/out of the dipper. (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. It's been a long time since my 580C went away.)
Proudly spending today building the dilapidated housing of the 22nd century....

    Basic instructions -
I do this with the extendahoe fully retracted to save any damage to the cyl rod
Set the dipper/extenda on a large log/ a pile of dirt/ rear tray of a truck (tip- chain it to the body) so that it can fully support it.- I usually leave the bucket on
Use some timber blocks to support the bucket cylinder
undo & cap the bucket cyl hoses - if you don't do this the hoe will flop all over the place & you will be drenched in oil = UNSAFE!
    remove the marked pin
be certain all hoses etc are clear of extendahoe
by driving the machine fwd & manouvering the BH boom & dipper, drop the extendahoe off the BH
remove the extendahoe hoses & cap them - tie a small rope to the end of the hoses this will feed it through the dipper for you - it will be required to reinstall the cylinder
remove the rear mounting pin for the extendahoe cyl & remove

there is a youtube video out there showing this job on a 580K - similar set up. I recall they use another machine to do the removal.

This is my second post as I'm doing my research prior to a purchase and again, I've learned something new in the first topic I've read today.

These things are not indestructible. And repairs can be expensive.

The last item is the one thing that worries me about buying a hoe. I'm not afraid to take on any repair, I just worry that with heavy equipment, I may simply not have the capability to handle the required repair.

What I am learning is to start with a good solid purchase.
