Cat 374 vs JD670 vs Kom PC650
Hey guys we are in the market for a "600" size excavator. We are considering Cat 374, JD 670 and Kom PC650
We primarily do big water and sewer jobs with a some smaller excavating jobs loading 30 and 40 Ton Articulating trucks. We only have one machine of this size in our fleet, a 2007 Cat 365. We also own JD 800s, 850 and Cat 385s. Due to the economy we have not bought a large excavator since 2008.
This new machine will replace a well used JD 750 with 15,000 hrs on the clock. It will be set up with hydraulic q/a, reach boom and standard stick (13.5" to 14")
I am working on setting up Demos, but there is not much stock around here.
The Cat and JD compare very close on price, HP, wieght, GPM Hyudralic flow and on the charts. The Kom 650 is a bit cheaper, but it is lighter, has less horsepower and less GPM hydraulic flow. The charts show that lift, break out, arm force etc are very comparible. I find that hard to believe. The counter wieght is heavy at 29K lbs (heavier than our JD 850!) and perhaps all that wieght back there hepls leverage?
Anybody out there run any of these machines and can give their feed back?
Thanks for the help.
Don't know where you're based but must be in North America if you're looking at Deere. What's your experience with the local dealer in each case? Support ought to play a big part in your decision.
Have you considered the Volvo EC700CL as well? Spec-wise quite in line with Cat and latest Deere's. There's quite a few loading 30-40t artics day and night, and all the bits you mention are available.

Business must be picking up a bit if you're back in the market. Good news!
I think that all the machines you mention in that size, as well as the Volvo, are solid machines. My decision would come down primarily to dealer support. Which dealer will be there for you with parts and service when you need it?
The Cat/Kom/JD dealers are all good for support each with their pluses and minus. No love for Volvo here, dealer is not a good as the others either.
Have Demos set up for next week. Sounds like we are going to get awarded a 3 jobs here ASAP, so will need to pull the trigger soon.
mate i would go for the komatsu but then again if you are in NA your back up from cat would be better but coming from the mining side of things in australia all the big diggers are all komatsu and hitachi. we never touched anything over a 50toner in cat
it really depend on dealer support #1 , Price #2 , resale #3, Demo is a close #3........... its one of those machines that not every one can use so its really important to like it and feel its going to last without BS breaking all the time. Komatsu is big around may area , my brother in law runs all around the East coast for his company doing onsite maintance and breaking it down for the road and reassembling once it on the next site (about every 3 months its moved). they are running mostly Kom 1250's but they do have a few mid size also doing large scale demo work.
id go for deere anything to do with hitachi is money well spent, cat manufacture cheap quick wearing parts that go to make them money when you have to buy new parts, komatsu are soft but reliable but not as reliable as deere/hitachi
