OK Alrman, I'll look up the seal rings tomorrow and order them. Is there a kit to seal the shuttle or are these the only seals it takes? You know, you're right! It is only money, money I don't have, but I'll spend it anyway. I'll bet I can get a washer big enough to go around the shaft for those shims. The gap looked that large to me. What about the gear grinding? Got an opinion on that? Do you really think anyone is learning from all this pain? Are they being entertained? I, personally, am learning a lot. I'm getting better at getting diesel, grease, oil, and hydraulic fluid stains out of denim. Fortunatly my wife has not yet caught me cleaning my finger nails with her electric toothbrush. Hopefully we'll hear from Knoxville, TN so we'll all be on the same page. Thanks for your help. Packratc

Packrat, you stay in a mess all the time it seems...

What I want to see is a picture of Chico. I think he is imaginary..

Actually I need to see a picture both you AND Chico together.

How true... I am thinking of breaking mine in the future to reclutch and reseal the shuttle and convertor, would love to learn from your experiences (mistakes).

Alrman. I called the dealer and we went through my previous order and we had ordered the shaft seals already. I still haven't ordered the spacers at the rear as I may try to make them to save a dollar. I also still haven't measured how much of a gap I need to fill in. I was going to order the gasket between the shuttle housing and the manual transmission but the parts man says the shuttle comes out the fron t and I probably won't need to split it there. What say You? Chico pointed out today the the holes in the round center plate look like they were/are leaking fluid. Such leakage would be into the bell housing. I think I mentioned early on that they looked like they might have a little fluid seepage. The seals replacement in the torque converter should fix that. Thanks again, Packratc

Chico is pictured in #38 as are the leaking holes that are mentioned in #39. Packratc is pictured in blue jeans and black shoes, size 10, in this thread. One must respect the rules laid out in the agreement with the Witness Protection Program. Thanks, Packratc

packrat, continue splitting the tractor into smaller pieces & do the job properly. It's easier to do it now than to have to pull it ALL apart again in near future.
The gear clashing problem is usually associated with drag through the shuttle - eg sticky piston - broken plates. If one of the 3 shaft seal rings are broken - pressure goes to fwd & rev at the same time & causes drive problems.

My thoughts exactly. If I'm going to go through the trouble of busting a tractor, I'm going to fix everything while I'm in there. It's no fun kicking ones own arse for not doing so.

Thank you Alrman & Willie59, now I've got to find out what a plate is and how it is broken and then how a piston sticks and where. I do know I'm in trouble if it's one of Mom's best china and its even got a nick in it I'm gonna be buried with this backhoe and soon! I'm not going to take anything more apart until I get in some parts. I'm afraid being in the geriatric set is dangerous when it comes to remembering what goes where. In the mean time I'll scrape some grease here and there & consider painting here and there. If I can't fix this thing I want it to lookk good as a yard ornament. No one has mentioned replacing the clutch packs, and I don't want to due to the expense, but if all this other has gone bad or leaks, how do I know they're good? Thank you again, Packratc

I'm kinda the other way around packy, I like to take things apart before I order parts, I want to see every thing to determine what parts are needed and order everything in one shot. As for remembering where everything goes, pictures with the camera during disassembly, take notes, make drawings of how things are oriented.

You're right, Willie59! I have taken some pictures but no notes nor drawings. I've never been any good at those sort of things. My mind works like I can put it together if I understand the function or how it works. If it makes no sense to me I'm lost from the gitgo. Chico & I have talked about this and I thing we left it at, "Surely to God between the two of us we should be able get it back together." We'll see! Packratc

Yes, pics are invaluable to note orientation of components packrat. But sometimes, when you're disassembling components, you may run across a washer with a bevel on it or something, some part that needs to orient in a certain direction and not be re-installed reversed, that's when making notes is handy.

Bowen, did you and Mikey catch the picture of Chico? His parents live about 300 yards down the road and he & Vera live on another road & their place adjoins me in the back in the woods. Chico can do anything, but he'll also do anything! I've known them for 35 years. It seems that he prefers not to work full time for a large company. He took off the other day to fix something in someone's barn, he repaired someone's hay elevator a couple of weeks ago, after they had run over it. Soon he'll be in the hay field fro his brother who has a horse barn down the road. He'll build a barn, roof, or repair anything. We're also adding on to my shop & going to build a log cabin out of telephone poles, after we finish the pond, fence around the pond, and he'll probably help me build the front end on my Dodge diesel truck. He is real handy! But, he makes more money than I do. Everyone needs a Chico just like everyone needs a 45 year old backhoe. Oh, I need to tell you that another retired guy asked me the other day, why I had a backhoe that seems to be costing me an arm & a leg? He asked why couldn't I just hire a backhoe guy to come out and do the work and forget it? I shouldn't have tried as I knew he wouldn't catch on, but I explained that it's a tool. That one day I may want to take down one tree, and the next month I may want to plant three. I may pour concrete, grade the driveway, or load scrap metal. He just looked at me and shook his head. He thinks I'm nuts. And I agree. But I've not asked him why he's had two face lifts, and dyes his hair, and watches rented black & white horror movies every night. I really don't understand why one nut doesn't understand another nut. Do you? It's either walnuts or pecans, who cares? Packratc

I'm not sure what to make of all this entertaining information. I do still need to see a photo of just you and him standing side by side.
