Jersey Barrier

I am curious how contractors around the country place and move jersey barrier,K-rail, or temporary concrete barrier, whatever you call it where ever you're from. What machine you use to place it, what kind of rigging you use, people placement and how many, and best numbers.

I can easily say that a Deere 624K that we used for the USMC work alright. I have moved many, from training missions in NC and IN all the way to the SE Asia theater. I have used travel deck cranes as well....namely a Koehring 7.5 ton carry deck. I would def use the front end loader again, as the crane needs a good rigging crew if you want to do it effeciently. For the end loader, our barriers had dunnage holes in them (casted like that) and if they didnt, we would use two 5 ton cargo straps or good chains. If we were REALLY busy, we would just slide the forks underneath or "dig" alittle with the fork tines and just pick up. For the crane, mostly chains or 5K kevlar slings.

they have one of those zipper machines up on hwy. 17 here its a damn slick machine.

But as for moving the not zippered together barriers i second the kenco clamp. I used them with a crane but they work great on a ex too.

We also use kenco automatic latching clamps with a two man crew, fella on the truck, fella on the ground spinning clamp, and a 321 or M318 with bucket removed(saves a couple pounds). Our barrier is 20 foot long weighing roughly 4 ton, allowing us to place 6 on a flat deck trailer hauled by a day cab road tractor. If we can keep trucks under the backhoe we usually average 100 pieces of barrier per hour or 2000 feet an hour. Best ever was 120 pieces an hour with brand new barrier, it basically falls into place. The barrier also has glare screen, the 18 inch tall slanted things on top that are oh so much fun to thread a clamp in between. Also there is a crew of three binding down the load of barrier, on the receiving end a three man crew unbinds, and yet another crew is there to unload the barrier, another backhoe and 2 fellas to Assist in the unloading process. Then back to get another load, just looking for ways to improve our process or just to hear how others do it, I hope I don't sound like a bragger, I'm always looking for ways to make us better, faster, and more efficient and I hope you can help.

Ive seen one guy and one machine placing them. Of course it takes someone else to bring him the pre-casts.

yeah they also have those "zipper machines" all over the east coast... mostly on bridges
