The first gear in a 653 is manually selected, it starts out in 2nd gear. Think of it as a low hole.

On the horns of a dilemma

How about an Allison MT-653? Those are a real Allison. With some digging, you can find them with the tail shaft drum brake.

    Tire prices

If you have any r-mix companies around that run fronts, you may hit them up. Older Advance, and some Phoenix used 9-22.5 on the lift axles. If you’re really lucky they may have a few NOS that no longer fits their new mixers and they would like to get rid of them.

    Galion 503L Grader

If it’s what I’m thinking of, your best option is take it to a machine shop that does power transmission and driveline work. They will be able to repair it faster and cheaper than OEM parts. You have a great machine, unfortunately it’s at least 50 YO and parts are getting harder to find. Look...

Pondering about truckers, coffee and trucks . . .

A place I used to work for had a couple 1988 2300 S Series IH that had cup holders built into the doghouse.

    JD 450c sitting 15 + years

Carefully examine the frame rails for any cracks or broken bolts. Replace and helicoil if stripped all bolts with a grade 8 at this point. I fishplated the frame rails the entire length on my B series dozer with 1/4” steel because of the cracks that do develop over 50 years of work.

    West Michigan heavy equipment mechanic?

Make sure the aneroid line from the intake manifold to the injection pump isn't cracked or loose. No boost signal to the pump will limit fuel injection rate.

Building a N14 into an automatic, flex plate Wet Bell housing and other questions

Look at some old front discharge mixers with a broken frame. Depending on the vintage it could have a Cat 3306, or a C10, C11, C12, or C13. Cummins fare is usually a L-10, M-11, or ISM, but the occasional 855/N14 pops up. Transmissions are generally HT-740, or 4560 Allison. Buy the whole mess...

They could’ve made it if they had some more forward momentum. Usually if you’re in the high side of the transmission you’ll be ok. :D

    SSHD front diff repair

Me personally I would put it together and never think another thing about a small difference like that. We all have effectively done the same thing when we put new tires on one axle, and run out what’s left of the remaining tread on the other axle.

    Looking at a Galion 118

It would work under the principle that water will boil at room temperature if under a vacuum. The same thing happens when you put the vacuum pump on an A/C system to evacuate the moisture, the water boils at 20 some inches of mercury.

    Looking at a Galion 118

Reminds me of a T-500C we had at a job I worked at years ago. It had a horizontal muffler that exited to the rear of the machine. The 3” angle cut pipe was irresistible to birds building a nest. The 4-71 would always fire up the first piston up and the nest and birds shoot out instantly.
