Champion 730A VHP Series V literature

Series 3 used open center hydraulics. They went to load sensing with series 4. Not a ton of change between series 3 & 4. I wonder if putting a bit of oil pressure on the load sensing line would troubleshoot if it’s the pump?

New to me 1998 Champion 740A Have Some Questions

If you pick up the back end of the machine and grab the top of the tire, you’ll probably feel play. The inner race wears its way into the sprockets. It’s not so much a ridge wearing into the axleshaft. The older ones didn’t have trouble but the bearings were an interference fit. You had to heat...

New to me 1998 Champion 740A Have Some Questions

The stereo is 12 volts I think. There’s a 24 to 12 volt converter behind the seat. If you find one day the alternator isn’t charging, check the two fuses in that converter. I would just about bet any power draw starts there too. Those transmission controllers have magnets in them that move...

    Reynolds Museum

Some pics I took from Reynolds Museum in Wetaskawin Alberta. Last 2 are Elevating Graders. I’ve never been up close to one before. https://photos.app.goo.gl/WXBbF5U4x6wGFRnw9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/gqkH5bPofLH6MuNu7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/M5V2L45X3RNxeKej6...

Champion 710A no hydraulics after parking.

So on the first 730 I ran, roughly 1990, and I’ve forgotten the serial #, my understanding was that it had a double sided pump under the rad for steering, brakes, and transmission. And the hydraulic pump was off the bellhousing. Somewhere along the line Champion switched stuff around to run the...

    2002 Volvo G720VHP Questions

I think they had the wheelbearings figured out by the time that one was built. They were a real pain on the series IV’s and early V’s. But I used to pick the back end up with the ripper from time to time and grab the top of the tire to give it a good jerk. The hydraulic booster on either the...

    NEW Cat 150 AWD

I guess to compare here on the prairie, we do roughly a third of our areas each year. The roads we do, they would average 250-300 yards per mile. Usually 10 trucks per mile, tandem with 4 axle wagon. I’m guessing, but 2000#’s per yard? 60000#’s/ 30 tons per truck so 300 tons per mile on the...

    Time to order new tires

Was that directed at me? I haven’t looked at the odometer on this one. Guys at Fort Mac talk about putting 7000 hours a year on things. This one was 9 years old when the story was written...

    Time to order new tires

Did you see Nige’s comment in the radial tire prices thread? We do pretty much the same thing. They might have an easier life in the winter season as well. Not sure. We haven’t had good luck recapping these Michelins though. The sidewalks are usually full of slits by the time the tread is warn...

    Time to order new tires

The Michelin Snow tires on the machine I run have over 8000 hours on them and we’ll probably leave them for a while yet before switching them out.

    Considering Volvo G940 Grader

Tony Beets has (or had) an SDLG loader. I talked to a few mechanics that seen SDLG loaders. When the first one showed up at Strongco Edmonton, the door fell off when they went to open it. I really liked the series 4’s, 5’s, and 6’s although the air conditioning on the 6’s was an adventure. And...

    Considering Volvo G940 Grader

2012 maybe. First year of their 4 on heavy equipment. And that was a big part of it. By that point the engine was a “D8”. The one you’re looking at will be the “D7”. They’re both built by Deutz. Some of those D7 engines had trouble with the “blocks dropping”. The liners would wear into the block...

    Considering Volvo G940 Grader

I guess they are comparable in size. Our experience with a 940b wasn’t great. Not as simple and reliable as the Champion’s before. Engine and transmission issues. How would Deere’s compare money wise? G series have been pretty good.

Think I made the right choice

Looks like that 780 went for $17k. Cab did look a bit rough for sure.

Faked CAT 140H grader from China

In the picture, that looks like a rigid frame grader. No oil tank behind the cab. Makes me think the oil pump isn’t under the cab. Also doesn’t look CAT around the lift group.

    Former Champion operators

The description above was more for the finish you’d do before pulling the spike over it when preparing for a race. As far as roughing it in, you’ll kind of get a feel for that and feel it tightening up as you run it. Any time I’ve done a bit of a “build” (usually more of a repair with a couple...

    Former Champion operators

Really?! I always enjoyed watching races at Sangudo. Was it still 43 Motorsports that ran it? On a road, when I have to deal with super elevation (banking), I have to be extra careful where I put the windrow and it’s size. And it may help to articulate a bit. As opposed to thinking of the...

    Former Champion operators

I guess the lack of “test and tunes” would explain why the 360 sprints used to show up at Sangudo the weekend before Castrol opened up. Car counts are so important. It wasn’t unusual to see 20 legends, baby grands or IMCA cars at the old Sunset Speedway. Whereas there’d be 5 or 6 late models.

    Former Champion operators

I had always hoped there would be something comparable to the legends cars or baby grand nationals for dirt. I guess they have mini sprints in Rimbey.
