    Cat 246 brakes

No, they don't hold on hills when engine is off. Looks from the pics that I might be able to loosen the end bolts evenly to release the springs. I wonder if the springs would stay in position while horizontal going back together.

    Cat 246 brakes

My 2001 Cat 246 A5SZ04xxx has about 5K hours and the brakes don't hold on hills. I suppose the discs are worn out, maybe springs too. Has anyone here replaced brakes on these? Do you have to disassemble the drive motor? I have a parts manual for this but it doesn't show a breakdown of the drive...

    Old Lincoln Welder

I sold that Wisconsin/Hobart since I last posted in this thread. It had 24 volt electric start through the welder. No external starter.

    Well it finally happened...

It's difficult for a man to pay you more when he owns you... or thinks he does.

    Well it finally happened...

I agree. Businessmen often look at everything as an agreement. Then forget their end of the agreement.

    Well it finally happened...

Dallas is a big area. You stated yourself that there are a lot of shtty mechanics out there. Well a lot of companies have hired mechanics that claimed to be the best and they turned out shtty, so they're jaded. Fact is, it's difficult to discern how an employee will turn out after he's hired so...

2001 Cat 246 controls not smooth

The joystick control hydraulic pilot circuit operates at a lower pressure than the rest of the hydraulics. I think there is a back pressure valve somewhere that regulates this pilot pressure. I have a 246 but don't know where the back pressure valve is, probably on or near the pump. Anyway, if...

    Fuel stabilizer recommendations?

Here in the North, most people use Howes and love it. No problems.

    Finding qualified help

I think a lot of these changes were brought about by insurance companies. Insurance companies are notorious control freaks. They're almost quasi-governmental agencies now. They dictate so many policies we have to follow. You work for a large organization you work in a world of policies and...

    i started my company

That looks like a USFS auction truck. I have a Jeep that color I bought from them. Puke green should impress them.

    i started my company

For a debt free start up I wouldn't hesitate to run a beater for a couple years. I would avoid financing at all costs, especially in these days of uncertainty. JMHO.

    i started my company

I wish I knew all the warning signs when dealing with people. The ones I've learned to watch for is people who smile too much, are "charming" and act like your friend. Some leave tell-tale signs that their word is no good and excuses are always good enough for them.... like when they show up...

    Figuring out slope/grade percent

The metric system is about globalization. One standard worldwide, one world, one government, one religion, one race, one people, one size fits all. It was decided for us behind closed doors. We are too dumb to be included in the discussion.

Which hand reamer for egg shaped hole?

I had a 1845C and the pins, bores on the triangular pieces were also worn out. My observation was that there are lots of pins and they are too small diameter for that size machine. What 6800 pound skid steers have 1" pins? Maybe the previous owner didn't grease them enough. To clarify, I think...

    Solar battery maintainer recommendations

A note on charge controllers. Older solar panels would work fine without a charge controller as long as it was a small one (like 10 watts for one battery). Most of the new solar panels are made to require a charge controller. If it says anything about MPPT, it needs a charge controller.

I won a Skid Steer at an auction but have just discovered the meter has been tampered with badly.

That's the kind of policy you end up with when you hire college boy management.

I won a Skid Steer at an auction but have just discovered the meter has been tampered with badly.

Lots of auctions are liquidations. A company might be going bankrupt, have a huge judgement against them or some board of directors who knows nothing about things mechanical decides the company must replace any equipment made before XXXX.

    Shifting a twin stick Mack

Our fleet didn't have them, but Macks back then had something called a "Dynatard Cam" as their Jake brake. If you ever adjust valve lash on them, make sure you do it like the manual says, using crankshaft positions on front pulley.

    Shifting a twin stick Mack

Those engines had a very wide power band and the oil nozzles under the pistons prevented damage caused by lugging.

    Shifting a twin stick Mack

I would call it "Main" and "HLR". Put the main in first and HLR in L. Then shift HLR to H. Then upshift the main like any 5 speed. When you need reverse, put main in first, HLR in R. Edit: "H" is actually direct. I haven't driven one since 1982. Makes sense that mack would put reverse in the...
