    Equipment keyrings...where, how, what?

I would love to get my hands on a couple of those Volvo keys with no plastic if you remember where you got them. The big plastic head is just so bulky on those.

Anyone use a "Swede" for grade checking.

So are you using a sight level? Or are you just lining up sight of the swede and the 2 tapes to see what lines up?

Anyone use a "Swede" for grade checking.

I am curious to see this. I'm not old school but I'm glad I learned on lock levels and grade stakes before GPS

    Topcon vs. Trimble

If you are going to add the millimeter system to your topcon you will need the mast high. The millimeter system adds a laser transmitter to help accuracy. If the mast is short the cab may block the laser at times.

Anybody know why newer dozers ride so rough?

What kind of undercarriage is on it? System One or SALT tracks. I've noticed on system one when the front of your tracks is on a hill, say approaching a slope to go up, the machine is very bouncy because the front idler is riding on the pins not the rails.

    backhoe bucket lifting eye position

Get an eye hoist hook like this that fit over the pin in the unused bucket holes, then make a pair of spacers out of pipe that fits over the pin to keep the hook in center, no welding required.

    Compaction- Soil Density and Moisture

I think the clay subgrade has been holding up. We were adding water before initial rolling of the lift, we would get the compaction numbers at around 3% moisture but had to hit at least 4.7% We would spray it again and static roll, small puddles of water on the surface. Tech would notice as...

    Need Some Control Guidance

Yes switching patterns on excavators is very tough, but in a skidsteer the styles are so different it is not that bad. Its like going going from a 4 stick case backhoe to joysticks in a backhoe, it just becomes second nature.

    Need Some Control Guidance

If you think the H pattern is harder you should try the Bobcat style, with foot pedals. Stick with it for a while, you will get better. You won't forget how to use the ISO controls. A good operator should be able run multiple machines with different kinds of controls. You don't want to be a...

    Compaction- Soil Density and Moisture

The gauge is calibrated. We are getting the 100+% compaction without the optimum moisture, but the engineers are saying if the moisture is not within 2% of optimum it is not good enough and to wet it down. So we are drenching the grade to the point it is starting to get mushy under the trucks...

    Compaction- Soil Density and Moisture

I am working on a taxiway project at a regional airport. The spec calls for 19" 2A sub-base, 8" FAA spec sub-base, and 6" asphalt. We dug the area out and have to compact the virgin dirt to 95%. The material is clay and is very tight but moist. The first half we dug out was able to air out...

    Best throttle position?

On ours the display has the throttle positions in colors, starts with light blue and dark blue then to green then yellow and red is full. The window has a sticker with descriptions, blue is fine control and heavy lift, yellow is general work, red is high production. Your operators manual should...

    Best throttle position?

On Volvo excavators low throttle speed is used for fine controls or heavy lifting. If you keep the throttle low (in the blue section) the machine will be able to lift heavy loads easier. It doesn't seem right but it works. I haven't seen this on other brands, just Volvo.

    Best small grader

Look at John Deere 570, they can be had pretty cheap, and I think some have a 10 moldboard

Take out the grease fitting and drive forward and back a little bit, it should help push some grease out to slack it off, then put the fitting back in and adjust as needed.

    Friction Crane Operation-Tips and Tricks?

Only 2 drums, the one farthest from the cab is the left hoist control, that one should have power down, don't know if the other will. To release the dog for boom lift up on dog lever (behind the seat) and boom up a little while pushing in on dog lever it will pop in and release. Same for hoist...

    Friction Crane Operation-Tips and Tricks?

The pedal on the left of the hoist lever is the hoist brake. If you push with the front of your foot it will lock and hold the load, if you push with your heel it will release and allow the load to freefall. Make sure to fully engage the hoist and boom levers when using, don't feather them...
