Questions about really big hydraulic excavators

I was looking at some specs for the Terex RH 400 vs. the Komatsu PC 8000, Hitachi EX 8000, and Liebherr R9800. (I think I have all the big ones listed) and have a bunch of questions: I know the RH400 is bigger than the others (by about 200T?), but what about bucket capacity vs. the others in...

    Trenching - Rookie question

What is the best way to trench? What I mean by that is how to you reposition the machine to continue digging? Should I just move back a bit at a time and continue raking up the face of the trench, or move back several feet and strip down the trench in "layers" until i get to grade? I have tried...

Stripping shovel flipped on its side

I saw a t.v. program a few years ago that showed a really large stripping shovel that fell over on its side while they were walking it. I think it was owned by Peabody Coal. Does anyone recall this? Did they save the machine?

Does that mean certain trucks are okay on local roads but illegal for the interstate?

    Axles and Weight???

We just drove across the northern U.S. and we noticed that many heavy dump trucks have totally different axle arrangements than here in western Canada. Most dump trucks here have a single steering axle and two drive axles. Some trucks we saw south of the border had two additional carrying axles...

Excavator operators - How do you know??

Wow!! I'm amazed at all the responses! What made me post this question is all the second guessing I do when I am digging. It seems I'm always questioning how I have the machine set up and usually thinking "There must be a better way of doing this!" Maybe I will get better and faster with more...

Excavator operators - How do you know??

I still consider myself very "green" when it comes to operating, but I have a question for all you experienced operators out there: When do you really know that you are a good operator?

    Why are they upsidedown??

There's probably a really simple answer to this but I'll ask anyways. Why are the boom cylinders upside down on large excavators?

    What is this thing?

I snapped a photo of this excavator today. It has a combination of cable and hydraulics and looks like it has lots of reach. Who made this?

Questions about big haul trucks - Dump box shape

(Thanks for all the answers about my cable shovel questions.) Next question: Why do some haul have a straight cab protector on the dump box and yet other trucks of the same model have a curved piece? It it for the type of material hauled? Capacity?

How would you get it up there?

I don't care if the photos were tilted and blurry, that is still a steep hill. As for the second set of photos, I am impressed! Looks scary to a rookie like me.

Other skid steers with pilot controls?

Right now we are looking for a smaller machine (7500lbs) that is easier to trailer. We will use it year round and definitely want a full cab a/c.
