Plenty of paddle pans

Last Friday morning I had zero paddle pans (which may prove to be the perfect number to have). Today I have 3;
Dresser 412B and IH 412B and Cat 615 46Z machine. The Cat needs batteries but seems to run pretty well, the 412's have been owned by a local contractor for the past 20 years or so and not run for a couple of years. They need batteries, a couple of tires between them, and a hoses at first glance. Both 412's refuse to turn over with fresh batteries, engaging the solenoid (I assume) and hitting immediate resistance. I tried bypassing the solenoid and jumping between the main lugs on the starter and got smoke and a few sparks. Is this proof that the starters are toast?
A friend tells me that trying to jump a 24 volt system with low voltage can burn a starter up and my problem could be as simple as that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Also, I was thinking about possibly renting them out to other contractors. Do they require such a rare skill set to operate that I am asking for trouble?
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

I hope to get them back to the shop the coming week so we can go over them out of the weather and dirt. I have considered them being locked up. We'll see fairly soon, I suppose.
I'm thinking of a rental rate on the 615 of $225 and the 412s at $175 per hour, with operator. Does this sound about right?

Are you trying to jump a 24V machine with 12V? that ain't gonna work. You can try to charge each 12V battery separately then try to start them,
Now, as far as renting them out... I wouldn't do it without operators that I knew and trusted.

Thanks RZ. Would jumping a 24 volt system with 12 volts fry or lock up the starters? I haven't got the 412's back to the shop yet. I'm trying to convince myself that the engines are not locked up and the starters could be cooked.

Yes, trying to start 24V machines with 12V wont end well. Get the 412's to the shop, charge or replace the batteries as necessary, then evaluate the starters.
Sounds to me like you have a pile of toys I wouldn't mind playing with for a bit myself.

I have an IH E200 been sitting at the shop. Water got in the engine and its locked up. Pulled the head and its looking pretty grim. Hate to scrap it, it was a great little machine to pick up windrows and fine grade with. Just dont have a need for it enough to repair it.

Stars and bars,

Will a DT360 from a truck bolt up? Is there a tractor that used the same engine? Give me a call if you get a chance after New Year's at 804-226-3801 and ask for Stuart. Happy New Year!

Plenty of paddle pans-update. Happy to report that we got the dresser 412b running and functioning yesterday. Our fears of a stuck engine were unfounded, on this one, at least, as the starter solenoid was toast. We replaced it, gave her a shot of ether, and after 10 minutes of idling, the blowby was greatly reduced and the old girl was functioning. Now we have to finish the pm service, fix a few hoses/seals, and put her to work.

Thanks to all on here for your help.
