Jim Backland , BCFP Renfrew Div. 1st picture use to be a common site in May & June a Bambi on side of road . 2nd picture is Botanical Beach on the Straits of Juan De Fuca just South of San Juan Bay . 3rd picture is a view of Upper Beach Camp these house's were moved down from The Old Harris Creek Camp in the early 1960's . The house in the for ground is that of long time Port Renfrew resident Norm Smith . I recall another house on this site burning down on a rainy Winter's night in the mid 1950's , cause was refilling a hot gas lamp with fluid . Those were the day's before the West Coast Road was built foscan30.jpg scan31.jpg scan32.jpg llowed by a B.C. Hydro connection to Jordan River .

Jim Backland , BCFP Renfrew Div. This old Steam Pot was abandoned not far from the Harris Cr / Hemmingsen Cr. Junction , the name "Jake Hill" was carved into one of wooden uprights for the roof . The old Yarder now sits in the B.C. Forest Discovery Center at Duncan B.C. .scan58.jpg scan59.jpg

Jim Backland , BCFP Renfrew Div. One of the few pictures I have come across of the #224 an HDX Hayes . The trailer being unloaded by the #319 a Washington TL 15 combination Log Loader / Yarder . Note the way the Grapple is lifting trailer , as there was still one TL 15 loading with tongs , there were two cable loops , one in front of bunk and one behind bunk to lift the trailerscan60.jpg scan61.jpg with tongs . The loaders equipped with Grapples had a hook on each side that we could hang a "D" on ( Mainline side ) the end of a cable "Spreader Bar " with a set of two hooks on the bottom end hook into the two loops on trailer . One time I was a landing Man and had just climbed up on the logging truck trailer which was loaded "Piggy Back" on the logging Truck and had hooked the two loops with the "Lifting Hooks" . As I jumped off the truck to get in the clear , I heard one Hell of a crash above me . When the Loader Operator had started to lift the Trailer the Boom Line had broken and the Loader Boom was lying on the Bunk of trailer . We had to replace the Boom Line before we could unload the trailer .
