Nice rigs. My first post, have been loving this forum, this thread especially. You guys have really nice rigs. I'm in the middle of setting up my first service truck for my side business. It's a 2000 F450. I've got a ways to go but you guys are lighting a fire. Thanks. Keep the pics coming.

G'day everyone this is my ute, reading this thread has given me a lot of ideas, i want to build a truck next year.
My ute has enough to get me by with a petrol air compressor in the middle of my boxes, its all on a frame i just unbolt 2 3/8 bolts and put the legs in and lift off when i don't need the boxes on.

Not too shabby. I've been quietly searching for another truck. Quietly so the mrs doesn't catch wind! I seem to attract a lot of the big iron so I'm seriously considering a boom truck as the start and add boxes etc to it. Not too many guys around here that can or want to tackle the D11's and mass excavators. Cat field supervisor told me to get into boring as well. We shall see! Getting a little taste of your weather down here, single digits this weekend they say. Not as cold but still cold!

Yeah, I was looking for something a little larger but cost restraints put the brakes on that one.
I've gone from my older 550 with no crane to this one so am excited to get it working.
I hear you with the cold:
Last two weeks have been around the 25celcius below through the day, colder at night...

Nice work Mark. I know just enough about steel and fabrication to get myself into trouble.:)

Why did you go with a welded and bolted splice instead of a fishplate weld on the frame? Just curious about the differences.

There are a few theory's. mine is any weld on a frame is a wound to the strength. So weld the two sections together with all the right techniques and add a section of frame with bolts to build on the weakness of the welded frame. All in all it should be stronger then new. But not really.

simonsrplant what c/a is the truck and how much room to mount the crane
The cab to center of rear axel is 136". There will be 96" behind that.i would like a small crane but it is a luxury on this truck. The reason I decided to build my own was I was unable to find a used truck to meet my needs. This truck is not a service truck. We work on radio towers and require a lot of hardware and many miles between jobs with the ability to fix anything.
