    Favorite phrases you use

Being a field tech, I at times get help from others, such as the operator or a hand on site. Which by me is fine - pass me this, pass me that. Go turn it over and the like. Thing is they just love sticking their fingers into places they shouldn't be. I find I'm constantly saying "Watch your...

    Which Fluke meter...87-V or 88-V?

If you're going to be spending all that cash on an 87 or 88, why not take a look at the 28-II? It has the IP67 certification, which means its dust, oil, and water proof/resistant. I've found that is more important as a mechanic then the majority of the options these meters come with. Its also...

    BC Fires

Family enjoyed it. I've gone to a few Ribfests, but they've been in the GTA area, and were absolutely packed - so I never got in line for Ribs. Just took the kids for the fun stuff. Kamloops was different, we got there Friday just after it opened. We were able to walk right up, get all the...

    BC Fires

I was in the Kamloops area all last week, for vacation if you can believe it. I was visiting my brother, who works in the aircraft/helicopter industry and he was consistently fielding calls for his helicopters - but he's got none left to send out, or move about. Quite a need for them. We...

    Tool help

When it comes to sockets, I tend to stay with the cheaper sets. I use 1/2" drive 90% of the time and have a mixture of mastercraft, craftsman, and other automotive store brands. They've lasted me 8+ years, and the only time I need to replace them is when I loose them. For me, that's the big...

    Fixing Pumps over the phone

I work for a dealership, as a resident tech, and certainly receive my fair number of phone calls from customers, and fellow mechanics. It can be something as simple as "what oil goes in this reservoir?", or "how does this come out?", or "what might cause this?". As a resident, without a close...

    Some photos from an apprentice

Well, Four years later and I'm working for a dealership now in Northern Alberta. I've made it through the "oil slump" (so far) and seem to be going strong. The work is constant, dynamic, and can certainly be difficult. The different aspects between working for a contractor, and for a dealership...

    Def in Diesel

They had a large tote, yes. The plastic kind, with the metal cage about it.

    Def in Diesel

I responded to a customer who filled the fuel tank right to the top with DEF. It was on a case loader, which had the fill ports pretty close to each other. They dumped out the DEF but couldn't get it running. I did get it going again, but it had constant issues(they needed it out of the way)...

Things you find in fuel tank

i've had a similar problem in a JD, D series skidsteer - a few times with different machines. The fuel is drawn up from the plastic tank, and through a small 90 elbow, and then to the transfer pump. machine wouldn't run well and wasn't making the pressure it should. Blew out that 90, and out...

    Blade not functioning properly

There is a pilot enable switch beside the blade controls, it feeds voltage from fuse f9 to the solenoid, and then heads to ground at the starter motor. I've seen solenoids that overheat, and become open, and once they cool down function again. But it's probably what you said, a loose connection...

    Blade not functioning properly

It will lift the blade up, but not down? When you move the pilot lever do you feel any resistance, or any hydraulic noise? First place I'd look is your pilot circuit, making sure you've got enough pressure to be moving spools.

Hydraulic over heats on 650 j

Shucks, I should have asked for the serial number I suppose. The lower serial numbers don't have the cooler, but the higher ones do, according to the manuals. 159987+ would be the higher ones. Did you get the pump off, by chance?

Hydraulic over heats on 650 j

Since you have a temp gun, I'd do a temp differential across the hydraulic oil cooler. Measure the bottom, and then the top of the rad, and see what the difference is. Just to make sure you're getting proper cooling across it. I'm not seeing a specification as to what the differential should be...

    1845 case tires installation

I use a trick much like franklinute, but with two crowbars. lean the wheel against the hub, trying to line up the holes with the studs as best you can. Then place the crowbars on either side of the tire, tight against the rubber, and lift up. The tire will usually slip into place, or you can...
