    My D6D

Use your C spanner and pipe to pull the big nut anti clockwise as far as you can, find a helper with a good eye and you each beat the tabs on the holder simultaneously with your biggest hammers (don't damage the holder or each other's kneecaps), repeat till it pops. Leave the outer nut on with...

Repairing older style dozer final drives D6D

Yes, RC, that's exactly how it works. Shims behind the plate, to move it outward on the axle, then when you tighten the outer cover up against the retainer plate it pulls the whole frame outward.

Repairing older style dozer final drives D6D

Having 3 lots of tapers, (axle to casing, sprocket to hub, axle to holder) that have been pushed, pulled and replaced who knows how many times in 40 years has this effect I guess. I would remove the nut and put as many shims as you have behind the retainer plate to force the track frame out and...

    Water pump

The D330 engine wasn't Cat's finest, and their belt driven water pumps were about the worst part of them.

    I expected the fuzz...

I dug out some old parts to give you a better idea of what you are looking at. The parts diagram will be difficult to follow if you haven't seen the inside of these transmissons. These are on a D4 trans but the design will be similar. Unfortunately the only way to find out if it is new or...

    I expected the fuzz...

Needle Roller bearing on for one of the planetary gears by the looks of those needles. Quite a few of them in there. Not sure if this is the correct part no. for your machine, just posted a pic so you have an idea of what I suspect it is.

Cat d4d transmission input shaft seal replacement

Merv is 100% correct if it has the pto setup. Apologies, that didn't even cross my mind as winches are almost non existent on these machines in my part of the world. Most came with a no4 ripper as standard equipment.

Cat d4d transmission input shaft seal replacement

You don't have to remove the transmission. You would split the converter from the trans at the 2nd row of bolts (holding the entire converter to the transmission casing), not the bolts which hold the front cover of the converter in place Splines connecting the t/c to trans. The t/c shaft goes...

Cat d4d transmission input shaft seal replacement

I seem to remember someone on one of the forums trying that some years back, but can't recall the result. I would recommend dropping out the whole converter and rebuilding it as the other bearings have probably taken a pounding too. Not a huge job, just a bit of a squeeze to get it in and out.

Cat d4d transmission input shaft seal replacement

No experience with winches here, but it appears there is no access from the back with them attached. You can still gain access to do the settings from the covers under the seat with a little more difficulty, so no need to remove the winch.

Cat d4d transmission input shaft seal replacement

Yes, they do hold a carrier in place to the outer casing, but it can't fall away when you remove the bolts. Be aware that those bolts are not concentric around the center. You can also use a flat bar with just two holes and something like an old bearing shell to pull the seal in. I have managed...

Cat d4d transmission input shaft seal replacement

Yes, you can replace the seal in place. It's a bit of a tight spot to get the new seal in. Easiest is to make a tool to pull it into place.

    D4K air fikter

I admit to stuffing up a 3304 by missing a piece of gasket stuck to the filter housing when replacing the inner element. Didn't take long.
