Concerning the reseal of a cylinder.......On "My First Track Loader", Boone has some interesting pictures and comments on page 12 of his thread. I know it is not a Cat, but same principle.

Wow that's cheap. Are you sure that's not per cylinder? Just the straightening and chrome would be over $200 ea. Not that .010 is worth straightening/replacing.

I wouldn't say cheap but after hearing they need re-chroming and straightening, I was expecting over $1000. Looking at another place that had rebuilt used cylinders, I'd bet the cylinders would cost around $2500 to replace with rebuilt used cylinders. Some people complain about a couple hundred bucks repairing cylinders on their farm loader. They're bent 10 thousandth's. I don't know what the limits are but that can't be much over it.

Rods are 1 3/4" and at least 24" stroke. I think the bend is over that whole length because it wasn't noticeable.

Update, it was each!!! I think the guy purposely told a price for each so it wouldn't seem too bad. Of course when I picked them up he said he made it very clear it was each. Well no he didn't. Very clear would be saying it will cost $1663.54 plus tax to have the cylinders repaired. I say this because originally he quoted about $259.00 each ($518 for both) to replace the seals if I brought just the rods in. I ended up taking the complete cylinders in. He said it would be over $600 but he'd do an estimate. I called and he said it would be $821.17. I don't remember him saying each but was about $300 more than the quote just to replace the seals. I needed them fixed and they also replaced the seals for the pins and painted the cylinders. He also said with the chrome being bad the bends were closer to 20 thousandth's. I guess I have to take his word for it. I wasn't able to inspect the cylinders when they were apart so don't know if the rods were as bad as he said or if the barrels really needed honing. Just makes me wonder if some places charge for a complete rebuild so they can make more money off a customer. Here's a breakdown of the cost:

2 7X2764 seal kits $140.22
8 K9201 Pin wipers $20.32
Hydraulic labour 6hrs@120 $720
Honing $140.00
Chroming 2@300 $600
Shop supplies $43.00
GST 5% $83.18
Total $1746.72

I have been there too , but the price for professional work is expensive , if you have any problems it's back to them.
At least you have done your best. hope it's not to cold there.

Actually it's unusually warm here, +8C or so which is why I decided to do the cylinders now. If it was -20C I'd wait till spring! Wouldn't surprise me if shop rates went up in the new year too. Now to figure out what to do with the 4 in 1 lines.

Anymore, not that I do not trust people, I try to get final, total cost estimates IN WRITING and either faxed to me or sent by e-mail prior to actually authorizing work.

I think it's best if repairs are going to be quite a bit more expensive to have the customer come in so they can see in person what the issues are. When I had my swing motor repaired, the shop called me to come down and showed me the grooved shaft that had to be built up. They did the work and I'm sure did a good job but they did a complete cylinder overhaul which is maybe what they wanted to do in the first place. The pin seals were only $20 but how much labour did they charge to put them in. They even put new grease fittings in and painted the cylinders. Yeah they look better but how much extra did that pad the bill?
