Just got off the phone with a friend in Langley and he said its smokey out there..I am across the river in Mapleridge and it seemed alittle smokey here today..Tomorrow will probably be worse....
Starter only clicks now...Doesn't even attempt to turn it over.New starter will be here in a week..

My weekly update....The new starter and sender unit showed up today.I put the new (SW) sender in tonight and hope to get the starter mounted tomorrow night or the next.Busy at work for a few days so the Grizzly gets the after dinner shift...Hopefully I will have it running again by the weekend.....

Put the starter in today after work.Same size as the other one so no big changes.Gave the key a try and it spun over like it had no spark plugs in it (Yes I know)So that is good..
I spent quite a bit of time hand pumping it (hand lever on fuel pump) and bleeding the lines.I have not cracked the injector lines yet and I will do that tomorrow. Finally on my last attempt for the night it tried to fire...
Should be running tomorrow...Its been just over a year since it last ran..

That's great diamondtguy! Don't forget to pull the choke when you start it! Lol!

I have the choke on my list of start up procedures as well as remembering to pump the gas pedal a few times....
No worries...I know what I am doing (har har)

So another day of frustration..Spent a good portion of the day trying to get it started.I bled the injectors 3 times.I even rolled the engine over by hand numerous times as I pumped the fuel through it to make sure I got every one.I spun the engine over with the starter and the lines cracked twice (nice mess)
I pulled the intercooler lines off the cooler to make sure the plastic plugs didn't get left in.I also hot wired the fuel solenoid to make sure its voltage wasn't lost when the starter was engaged.....Still no start..
I finally tried holding the throttle open and starting it..Fired right up but would not idle..
I now put my remote starter switch on it and got it to fire up by holding the throttle half open..but its not happy..
You have to have the throttle half open to get it close to idle speed..I rechecked my clocking on the pump for the linkage arm..Most are on the second line.I put mine back where it was originally was when I had the pump apart. That was between 1 and 2 lines so I moved it to 2 .This should speed it up but no change...

There is a noise in the pump (VE Pump) that sounds like the AFC diaphragm is fluttering.Something is wrong..
The AFC as far as I can tell reads boost pressure..I am thinking I have a air issue..
I have either done something wrong or something has gone wrong..
For the record all I did to the pump was change the fuel pin and governor spring..
I am going to revisit my changes to the pump tomorrow and see if I can find something wrong otherwise I have access to a Cummins guy and I will let him loose on it.He comes highly recommended and not far away..
I am happy to hear it run (no leaks) and will spend tomorrow trying to find out whats making then engine a unhappy fellow..
For now....I am going to enjoy my very cold rye and coke...

So today I pulled the top half of the injection pump back apart to revisit my changes..
I carefully checked everything and couldn't really find a reason for the way it was acting..
The fluttering/chattering noise I heard may have been the PS pump which is just below and had run it self dry from filling the system..Not positive.Noise is gone now tho.
I started it back up and it still requires the throttle to be half open to idle.No smoke to speak of and the engine sounds fine.It will idle but only if you hold the throttle open.Release the throttle and it dies..
I did find that my new throttle pin is .090 longer than the original. So tomorrow I will reinstall the original and try it..The .090 difference could be putting the ramp in the wrong position...and change the AFC position and spring pressure..
More research and fiddling tomorrow...Not given up yet...

Thank-you...
So I changed the fuel pin back to stock and the truck wouldn't even start. That pushed me to the other thought I had about the fuel screw..I had to remove it everytime I took the lid off..Close inspection showed 3 shiny threads..Fuel screw is out to far..Its not easy to get to but I managed to wind it in far enough to loose the shiny threads..Truck started but still wouldn't idle (other fuel pin is back in)I noticed that the gap to the idle stop was 1/2 what it was..I just kept turning the fuel screw in 1/2 turn at a time and with in a couple turns the engine was sitting there happily idleing on its on...
I took a short video of it with my Pentax digital camera..I will take some proper videos when I pull the truck out....
A very learning experience.....

Thanks you.....I have more to do....
Yesterday when I had it running I noticed the p/steering hoses were getting quite hot and I realized I didn't have a cooler.I also noticed that the brake pedal had been sucked down..I have a hydraboost (hyd booster) .Not sure if its hydra or hydro..internet calls it both...I found the brake pedal thing strange..
Today I installed a cooler in it that I had hanging around..Put some better hoses on and fired it up.It started instantly...Tried the power steering and I had nothing...Check hose routing and all is good...
Check brake pedal and it is still up...Remembering yesterdays problem I push the pedal down a bit and the power steering is trying to work..I think there is a valveing issue inside my booster..After a minute the pressure backed up and the pump reservoir was trying to empty itself(under pressure)...This is probably the heat is was feeling yesterday as I appear to be dead heading the pump..
I have not touched the pump or the box but I did have the booster apart.I just split the cases and replaced the end seals as it was leaking out of both ends..I have a spare booster that I was going to try and adapt to the Diamond T but its metric and the Grizzly one is Imperial.
Tomorrow I dig a little deeper.....

Took the booster back off today and gutted it..While checking everything out I tried to push the spool valve through its stroke and it just wasn't right. Had a tight crunchy spot that you could push it past but it just felt wrong.I pulled the spool valve out and the problem was obvious. It was packed full of chuncks of black hose,as were both the high pressure ports..So...I was indeed dead heading the pump...I also found some read plastic or rubber in the booster.
Some how or another I guess I stirred all this stuff up...I built thousands of hoses at Pacific and still build my own and this just isn't my work..
Non the less I cleaned it all out, brake cleaned everything and then oiled up all the parts and put the booster back together and on..
I think tomorrow I will remove all the hoses and blow them out in case the stuff has migrated around...
Hopefully this works...Another learning day...

More Grizzly news...
Not a good day...Still not happy with me..
No brakes or steering when I started the truck today...I disconnected the booster and still had no steering. Finally got the steering to start working but all it did was moan and chatter..Jacked the truck up to take the weight off and cycle it .Finally got all the air out and reconnected the booster...Kept running the steering side to side and bleeding the booster..Still not happy.
Bled all the brakes to make the pedal happy but not helping..Pedal sticks down about a 1/4 of a inch and wont release the brakes.Shut the truck off and the pedal rises and you hear a small hiss...I cycled it about a dozen times but still the same...I even released the master off the booster but the pedal still stays down a bit till you shut the truck off..
These are all the same parts that I drove the truck home with...
Starting to look like I need a new booster..
Tomorrow I will put the tuck on the ground and see how the steering feels/sounds with the weight of the truck on it...
Some days you get the bear....other days the bear gets you !!!!!!

I have taken the booster all apart and found nothing...As I don't have the dimensions or tolerances I don't have much to go on..I decided to find a new booster. After some computer time looking at pages of pictures I determined it was a mid 70's Ford unit..
I also looked for someone to go through my booster but the closest place is Kelowna and shipping it (its very heavy) doesn't make sense..
Not that I cant redo fittings but the booster is all Imperial and by 81 a lot of them were going metric..
Anyways...I found a rebuilt one through Lordco .Its in Ontario and I should have it in a week..Price is under $200..
Still don't know why it worked before and not now.....

grizzly 001.JPG grizzly 002.JPG I had them expedite my hydraboost in and got it late yesterday..I did good on my research as it has the same casting number as the old one.Other than swapping some stuff over the only problem was they installed the brake pedal rod in and its one of those one way clips and after an hour I gave up trying to get it out..As its got a warranty I didn't feel that damage would be a good thing...
The problem is/was the push rod is one inch longer than mine.Cutting and welding was out of the question. My only option was to space it off the firewall by an inch..All I had here was some UHMW so I made some spacers..I will water jet a aluminum one when I get back to work...
I fired it up and everything seems to be OK...A little bit of air in it but it will come out..
I will do some more testing tomorrow...So far so good..

Finally got my little headache rack together....and it was a fricken headache...
Couldn't do it here as I have no room in the shop..My friend who was going to weld it up no-showed twice over the last 4 weeks.Went to another friends shop to use his tig machine and steel bench. grizzly 001 (92).JPG grizzly 002 (95).JPG His nice new Miller has issues so home I went..So I pushed my 67 forward and set up my well worn and too small B/D work mate in a little 6x6 space...
I also seemed to have mixed two pcs up when I coped everything and I have no spare material..So they had to be cut, fixed and welded up.All this in a shop getting close to 90 deg..
Certainly not my best work but I now have a place to hang my license plate...High up and out of the way.
My interior guy will be her tomorrow morn to get started on things..Nothing fancy as its a truck and I will be using it...
